Swine Flu Spreads Across Mexico, India Falters

HT / Agencies

New Delhi, Apr 29: Within 24 hours, the swine flu death toll in Mexico climbed to 152, putting Indian holiday plans in jeopardy and forcing many frequent fliers to choose conference calls over business travel.

While the World Health Organization (WHO) has not advised restrictions on food (eating pork) or international travel, it has asked all people with flu symptoms travelling through affected countries (see box) to get tested and treated.

Swine flu symptoms include fever, lack of appetite, cough, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhoea.

The advisories are expected to affect outbound travel to Europe and US.

“Governments have started issuing advisories and travellers are being asked to take adequate precautions. There could be an estimated 20 per cent fall in overseas travel if infection spreads across continents,” said H.K. Singh, general secretary, Travel Agents Association of India.

Though an advisory has been issued in India, a reality check of the government’s contingency plan showed that nothing is in place at Delhi and Mumbai airports that get the maximum flights from affected countries.

On Tuesday afternoon, the health ministry announced its travel advisory.

Airport authorities in Delhi were asked to put up health counters late on Tuesday evening. "We haven't got a notification from the health ministry on steps to be taken. We  did get a call asking us to set up eight special counters to screen passengers on flights from Mexico, US and Canada from Tuesday midnight," said a Delhi International Airports Limited spokesman.

The health ministry had announced they would assign 32 health officials to Delhi airport and a similar number to Mumbai, who would work in four shifts in groups of eight.

Airlines, however, have still not been informed. "Usually travel advisories are issued by the WHO, but we have not heard from them or the Indian government," the Air India spokesperson told HT.

The situation is no better at Chhattrapati Shivaji International Airport, with the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) being asked to provide only three counters at the country's busiest airport. "We have been asked to provide facilities by Wednesday noon. They may start screening in the afternoon," said an MIAL spokesperson.

Checking every passenger for symptoms could result in delays and long queues at immigration, fear airport officials. "These counters are located before the immigration counters. It could cause chaos," said an airport official requesting anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

What you need to know about swine flu Washington, Apr 28 (ANI): While there have been a number of outbreaks of the new strain of swine flu, there also have emerged a whole gamut of misinformation. Now, scientists have elaborated exactly what one needs to know about this new epidemic. Infectious disease expert Charles Ericsson, M.D., professor of internal medicine and director of Travel Medicine at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston have answered some questions regarding swine flu, which are as follows:

    1. How do symptoms of swine flu differ from other types of flu? None, really, although this flu might include gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhoea and vomiting), as well as the usual respiratory symptoms. The basic symptoms for swine flu are similar to the seasonal flu we are vaccinated for each year, which may include, fever, sore throat, cough, stuffy nose, chills, headache and body aches, and fatigue. 2. Is there medication for this? Yes, Tamiflu or Relenza have shown to be effective against these recently reported strains of swine flu. Altogether, there are four anti-viral drugs that we commonly use to treat various strains of flu. 3. Is there a vaccine? Not yet, but the CDC has this current strain of virus and will consider whether to add it to next year''s flu vaccine as time goes on. 4. Can I catch it from pigs? No. This strain is one that is communicable through human-to-human contact. It is a mutated form of a swine virus. 5. Can I catch it from eating pork? Absolutely not! Swine flu is not transmitted by food. It is not a so-called food borne illness. Bacon, ham and other pork products are safe to eat, assuming they are prepared properly. An internal temperature of 160 degrees for cooked meat will kill any bacteria or virus. Swine flu is transmitted by airborne lets from an infected person''s sneeze or cough or from germs on hands, or germ-laden surfaces. Eating pork will not give you swine flu any more than eating chicken will give you bird flu.

    6. How does it cross from a pig to a human? The swine virus mutates so that it can infect humans and be spread by humans. 7. Can it kill me? Deaths have been reported from the Mexico City outbreak. So far the cases in the US have been mild and there have been no deaths as yet. But, like seasonal flu, there is the potential for serious outcomes. 8. How is it different from avian (bird) flu? Avian flu so far has had difficulty infecting humans unless they are exposed intensely to birds, because the virus has not mutated in a way that makes it transmissible by humans to other humans. This virus has origins genetically from both pigs and birds, and the big difference from the avian flu is that this swine virus can be transmitted readily from human to human. 9. What if I''m on a plane? Should I wear a mask? Not necessary. The air on a plane is filtered. Transmission might occur if someone sitting close to you coughs or sneezes on you.

Some years back everyone was talking about SARS, Bird Flu, Foot and Mouth disease etc. That time people were still eating chicken, beef etc without any problem. Well cooked meat is not harmful at all. Everyone is free to eat whatever he likes, as long as it does not harm anyone. Eating pork, beef and chicken is not at all harmful, depending upon the health of a person.

In the modern world even vegetarians are prone to many diseases. The chemicals used to kill the germs or pests in vegetables are more harmful than animal meat. Even some health experts suggest than eating fish and poultry is better than eating vegetables.

Without knowing the facts about any deadly virus or flu, we should not jump to some illogical conclusions. It is equally important for us not to link this issue to anyone''s religious beliefs.

The most recent evidence shows the Mexican flu did not arise from pigs. It is a shame that some people have used an occasion of human suffering as an opportunity for self righteous preening.

Shame on those worthless people who bring in religion even in a serious malady. Someone at some corner of the world suffers from  a deadly disease, and we  instead of spreading awarness of how the disease spreads and working on its prevention are trying to stir up ignorant people''s minds by bringing religion in between.. Dont fight in the name of religion.. religion was created by man for his peace of mind.. not to create chaos in society..

Q: What is swine flu? A: Pigs spread their own strains of influenza and every so often people catch one, usually after contact with the animals. This new strain is a mix of pig viruses with some human and bird viruses. Unlike more typical swine flu, it is spreading from person-to-person. A 1976 outbreak of another unusual swine flu at Fort Dix, N.J., prompted a problematic mass vaccination campaign, but that time the flu fizzled out. Q: So is it safe to eat pork? A: Yes. Swine influenza viruses don''t spread through food. Q: How do I protect myself and my family? A: For now, take commonsense precautions. Cover your coughs and sneezes, with a tissue that you throw away or by sneezing into your elbow rather than your hand. Wash hands frequently if soap and water aren''t available, hand gels can substitute. Stay home if you''re sick and keep children home from school if they are. Q: How easy is it to catch this virus? A: Scientists don''t yet know if it takes fairly close or prolonged contact with someone who''s sick, or if it''s more easily spread. But in general, flu viruses spread through uncovered coughs and sneezes or—and this is important—by touching your mouth or nose with unwashed hands. Flu viruses can live on surfaces for several hours, like a doorknob just touched by someone who sneezed into his hand. Q: In Mexico, officials are handing out face masks. Do I need one? A: The CDC says there''s not good evidence that masks really help outside of health care settings. It''s safer just to avoid close contact with someone who''s sick and avoid crowded gatherings in places where swine flu is known to be spreading. But if you can''t do that, CDC guidelines say it''s OK to consider a mask—just don''t let it substitute for good precautions. Q: Is swine flu treatable? A: Yes, with the flu drugs Tamiflu or Relenza, but not with two older flu medications. Q: Is there enough? A: Yes. The federal government has stockpiled enough of the drugs to treat 50 million people, and many states have additional stocks. As a precaution, the CDC has shipped a quarter of that supply to the states to keep on hand just in case the virus starts spreading more than it has so far. Q: Should I take Tamiflu as a precaution if I''m not sick yet? A: No. Overusing antiviral drugs can help germs become resistant to them. Q: How big is my risk? A: For most people, very low. Outside of Mexico, so far clusters of illnesses seem related to Mexican travel. New York City''s cluster, for instance, consists of students and family members at one school where some students came back ill from spring break in Mexico. Q: Why are people dying in Mexico and not here? A: That''s a mystery. First, understand that no one really knows just how many people in Mexico are dying of this flu strain, or how many have it. Only a fraction of the suspected deaths have been tested and confirm

Mr Navin Sinha, you are commenting without even knowing what your ancestors were doing. In fact there was no vegetarian food as such during vedic times. Even Brahmins used to eat meat after hunting for animals, only the difference is that then animals were healthy & now nobody knows whether the meat people eat belongs to an healthy animal or not.

GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT BEFORE POINTING FINGERS AT OTHERS. This message is for the bunch of ignorant people who seem to know little about the swine flu virus and have the audacity to make derogatory comments about other religions. Here are some facts about how the virus spreads to humans. Can people catch swine flu from eating pork? No. Swine influenza viruses are not transmitted by food.

You can not get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products is safe. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160°F kills the swine flu virus as it does other bacteria and viruses. How does swine flu spread? Influenza viruses can be directly transmitted from pigs to people and from people to pigs. Human infection with flu viruses from pigs are most likely to occur when people are in close proximity to infected pigs, such as in pig barns and livestock exhibits housing pigs at fairs.

Human-to-human transmission of swine flu can also occur. This is thought to occur in the same way as seasonal flu occurs in people, which is mainly person-to-person transmission through coughing or sneezing of people infected with the influenza virus. People may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose. Source: Centers for disease control & Prevention (http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/)

US health department and other health institutions clearly stated that swine flu does''t spread by eating pork. If the pork is infected then it may be dagerous. Likewise if the vegetables are rotten you may also have health problems. Non vegetarian and vegetarian depends on ones own choice. No need here to bring vedas and ancestors. What is the need of hour is to protect ourself from contacting the flu.

Mr. Navin Sinha and Vijay Saxena, It seems you both are in partnership to support each other blindly, I have seen you supporting each other in other places too. May be you people are talking out of ignorance or with arrogance. You are talking about your ancestors, can I ask you, do you know about your ancestors? Can you show me one line in any of your religious scriptures prohibiting consumption of meat – in any Vedas or Puranas?

In contrast, I can show you abundant instances to show that saints and kings used to consume meat including cow meat. It is only of late that meat consumption was prohibited by a section of Hindu society by custom. Human anatomy is structured to consume both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Just look at the structure of our teeth and study a bit about it, you will understand then. Nature has allowed human beings to consume both.

Since I am a Muslim, I feel, it is justifiable to let you know what Muslim holy scripture says about food. Quran repeatedly instructs human beings to eat permitted and healthy food, whether it is vegetarian or non-veg. It has specifically prohibited consumption of swine meat and similar others.

Even in the case of permitted meat, it is instructed to eat only slaughtered meat since slaughtering removes blood from the meat. Again, there is no prohibition in Islam to eat anything if it is a question of survival.

Vijay Saxena, Have you checked around you as to how many vegetarians took to eating non-veg after coming to the place where you are ? That is including Beef ? Do you think teaching of Veda did not concern them when changing their eating habits ? I don''t think so.

Man adopts to whatever food available in his habitat. For example, for those who work in Russian countries, horse-meat is common food. We must not impose our lifestyle on others but accept them as they are. When one finds high cholesterol in his blood as age advances, he automatically reduces intake of food items detrimental to his health.

To make it more clear from what Lewis (Chikmagalur) said, the disease first infects the people who work in a pig-farm and then through their sneeze/coughing it spreads to others. There is a discussion to change the name from swine flue to something else as organizations who deal with port products fear that it would harm their business but WHO has not yet granted permission.

However, it is advised that not only pork, any other meat must be thoroughly cooked before consumption to kill the virus.
