Mangalore: LLB Students Resort to Unlawful Means to Clear Exams?

Mangalore, May 2: Mangalore University vice-chancellor Dr K M Kaveriappa has informed that the varsity syndicate that met to consider the gross irregularities that have come to light in the tabulation process of the LLB (bachelor of laws)  degree examination conducted by the University, has decided to order a detailed investigation.

It has been found that the students who actually failed in the LLB examination held in October 2008 had been promoted, marks of students who scored high marks have been tampered with and pruned down while some students who did not appear for the examination were allotted marks. "We will find out those who operated behind this irregularity and take strict action against them, to ensure that the examination process continues to command credibility," he explained.

Prima facie, a team of six tabulators formed by the review committee that went into the LLB examination tabulation (October/November 2008) found that answer paper tabulation of 79 students had been tampered with.  The team stated in its report that it has found that marks mentioned in the ledgers and lists of candidates were higher than actually scored by them in several cases, in the case of some students, the marks noted against their names were less than what they had actually scored, while marks were found to have been allotted in the ledgers for students who never attended the examination.

The irregularities reportedly came out about two months ago, but the university woke up the graveness after the team submitted its reports. There have been allegations that students were favoured by accepting money from them.  The meeting decided to withhold the results of 79 candidates in whose cases irregularities were found, till the case is investigated by a senior lawyer.

Mangalore University is known to follow strict procedures in holding examinations, evaluation, tabulation etc and for the first time, these irregularities have been reported. Syndicate members and also Prof A M Narahari, president of the Union of State University and College Teachers Associations have condemned the incident and insisted in unison for holding of a proper inquiry to ensure that the University, which commands respect everywhere, clears its name.
