Mangaluru, Jun 9: The government has released grant of Rs 85 lac to each of the zilla panchayat constituencies in Dakshina Kannada district for undertaking emergency drinking water projects to solve drinking water shortage.

A sum of Rs 30.53 crore is currently available to take up new projects out of grants for 2018 - 19. This amount is being distributed at the rate of Rs 85 lac to each zilla panchayat constituency. The projects including borewells will have to be executed subject to guidelines of the government.

Some of the works under rural drinking water supply project have been given to gram panchayats. Works like hand pumps, mior water and effluent water management, overhead tanks in residential areas, laying of pipes from there into the villages and maintenance fall under the responsibilities of gram panchayats. Providing water connection to houses, schools, anganwadis etc and providing pipelines from tube wells dug by the government during drought also are allocated to gram panchayats.
