Bengaluru, Jun 12: Archbishop Dr Peter Machado of Bengaluru expressed deep regret of the sad demise of legendry playwright, actor and recipient of Padma Bhushan and Gnanpeeth award Dr Girish Karnad at his residence in Bangalore on Tuesday. The Catholic Bishops of Karnataka with the entire Christian community, the priests, religious and the lay faithful joined him conveying his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, said a statement.

Dr Girish Karnad was a man of multidimensional talents in nature. Theatre was his vocation. He was a prolific writer, thinker, actor, social activist, non-corrupt and fearless speaker, but also left an indelible impression on cinema. His talents did not limit to Kannada alone but expanded vastly to touch the national borders. Karnad, with his powerful voice and immense screen presence, was one of the few writers who could translate literature into action as well. Some of his prominent works to be remembered include 'Nagamandala', 'Hayavadhana', 'Tuglaq' and 'Yayathi'. He was fearless and critical against the social injustice. He would not hold back from airing his views on any topic. He spoke frankly about what he believed. “We have lost a legend in field of literature and arts. Truly our cultural world is poorer today,” the Archbishop added.

“In this moment of sadness, the priests, religious Sisters and lay faithful of the entire Christian community of Karnataka and the Archdiocese of Bengaluru deeply mourn the death and pray, that the Lord may grant strength and fortitude to the bereaved family. May his soul rest in peace,” Metropolitan Archbishop Machado further stated.
