Mangalore: Water Supply Pipe ruptured: Houses, Shops Inundated

Mangalore, May 18: After the main pipeline laid by Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) for supplying water to the city got ruptured on the main road at Bendorewell area of the city on the night of Saturday May 16, water gushed out at great speed. The water that entered hotels, shops and houses located in the neighbourhood, caused considerable problems for the owners, general public and road users alike.

As a result, the newly asphalted road that was opened for traffic three days ago, has been closed for traffic again. The road had to be dug up to repair the leakage. The rupture has been repaired. However, the people of the area and the road users are apprehensive of the problems any future ruptures of the pipeline are likely to cause. If the past experiences of the locals are any indication, the road, deeply dug up for several feet, will be closed by following temporory methods. The area will most likely suffer caving in due to the force of the monsoon rain because of poor workmanship in closing the dug area. If this happens, the pipeline runs the risk of suffering damage again, and the people of the area will have to cope with the rain water and also the pipeline water.

The citizens expect the authorities to conduct thorough and lasting repairs to both the pipeline and the road, to avoid further complications to the traffic and the people of the region.
