Bengaluru: Traffic fines go up multiple times for select violations

Bengaluru, Jun 28: People riding vehicles and others willing to break traffic rules need to be doubly sure before they do this again. Because unlike in the past, these violations attract heavier penalty.

Use of cellphones when driving, parking of vehicles in 'No Parking' zones, riding vehicles at high speed etc are the offences for which fines have just been enhanced. The new rates have come into effect from Friday, June 28.

Use of mobile phones when driving will be fined Rs 1,000 for the first time. If you repeat the offence, the fine will go up to Rs 2,000. If the vehicle does not have fitness certificate, fine for the first instance is Rs 2,000 and for the second time, Rs 5,000.

If the vehicle does not have insurance cover, Rs 1,000 would be levied for the first time. People parking in 'No Parking' zones will have to cough up Rs 1,000 for the first time and if they repeat the mistake, the fine will go up to Rs 2,000.

These fines are fixed within the limits prescribed as per Motor Vehicles Act 1998.

    Police cannot stop vehicles without "probable cause." They should have a reason i.e. speeding, broken signal lights, not wearing seat belt, talking on the phone while driving etc. It is illegal for them to randomly pull over a vehicle without any reason. Once stopped, it is their duty to explain the reason for pulling over. Traffic police should be provided with body cameras.

    May be you have missed out few...Non compliant number plates, Registration numbers, unauthorised additional fittings.. too many dents etc...to name a few...

    For each potholes in the city, the corporation should be fines Rs.5000 as its dangerous and can kill riders.
    On highway for each pothole on National Highway, BJP should pay Rs. 10000 as the risk here is double.

    No. of cases using mobiles while driving increasing day by day. Penalise them also and curb such activities which causes accidents

    Jai ho..... This is the result of all the waivers and freebees offered in election manifestos. Now it is payback time for all the public... what you receive in one hand give it away by other hand. Just wait and watch for more such shock waves when the Union Budget gets announced very shortly.......it's tax....tax......& tax....!!!!
