Udupi, June 29: In an incident that occurred on Friday, June 28, a 200-year-old well that was near the government bus stand of Hiriyadka near here, collapsed along with its compound wall.

Two or three days ago, the inside wall soil of the well, which is 30 to 40 feet deep, had caved in. Bommarabettu gram panchayat members, who sensed danger, had erected a circular barricade around the well to prevent any loss of life. Even officials including Tahsildar had done a spot inspection.

The locals used to call this well as 'Dharmada Baavi'. Water never used to get dried up in this well even during hot summer. It is said that the nearby hotel and other shop guys used to use the water of this well.

Tahsildar Pradeep Kurdekar, members of Bommarabettu gram panchayat and Hiriyadka police visited the spot and conducted inspection of the collapsed well and surrounding area. As this well is in the midst of Hiriyadka temple and bus stand, it was decided to fill the well with mud, keeping in mind the safety of public. Accordingly, around 15 to 20 loads of mud was put into the well to close the and the two-century old well forever.
