New Delhi: Manmohan Singh Appointed Prime Minister

TOI

New Delhi, May 20: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh & UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday met President Pratibha Patil and staked claim to form the new government.

Earlier, the crucial UPA meet to decide Cabinet berths concluded at 10 Janpath, the residence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, a while ago. All the key pre-poll partners of the Congress attended the meeting.

National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee, DMK chief M Karunanidhi, NCP president Sharad Pawar and leader Praful Patel were present, along with senior Congress leaders, including Pranab Mukherjee, P Chidambaram and A K Antony besides Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

Sonia Gandhi was re-elected UPA chairperson during the meeting. Her name was proposed by Karunanidhi and seconded by Mamata, the Trinamool Congress informed mediapersons.

All eyes are now on the likely candidates who would head some of the most important ministries in the next Congress-led UPA government. The Ministry of Human Resource Development, headed by controversial Congress leader Arjun Singh could throw up a surprise. According to sources, a serious contender for the ministry is Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi. Kapil Sibal’s name is also doing the rounds, according to TV channel Times Now.

Congress sources mention May 22 as a probable date for swearing-in of the new government. The previous day, May 21, being the death anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi, the party leadership is keen to delay the launch of the new government by a day.

While numbers are no longer a big hurdle for the Congress-led alliance and the process appears to be a formality, working out the terms of power-sharing may create complications. Congress leadership got a reminder on Tuesday when the DMK leadership came up with big `wish list' for portfolios.

There is also the fear that the muscle-flexing may encourage similar demands from Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee. The Congress had initially estimated that the maverick partner may not insist on big portfolios because she would not like her colleagues to grow in stature. They are not so sure any more. The fear is that the arm twisting may incite the Trinamool leader to up her ante as she would not like to be seen as playing in a league below that of the DMK.

Congress may have a task on its hand if the Sharad Pawar demands that the representation of his contingent from the NCP should not be scaled down to be brought in line with the new numbers. Besides expectations of a suitable portfolio for Pawar, Congress will also have to manage demands for his associates like Praful Patel.

Dr.Manmohan Singh is good administrator. No doubt. But still Congress is hanging in balance due to less seats and ill-health of Prime Minister. We pray with Allah to give him good health to complete his five year''s period with no hassles.

I am pro-congress from Indira Gandhi days. As time changes in karnataka BJP won more of the seats. It''s now my intention to vote BJP in next election only if they will contribute something good to karnataka. Never mind to me, whoever in the ruling, but do good for all the people.

Now Congress will become the ruling party & everybody here is trying to praise Congress on one hand & condemn people as Nagesh, or so. Mr Nagesh has given his comment as a true citizen, & it doesnt mean that all has to fight against him. Please note that in Karnataka, the Congress has been virtually swept away, & we have been enjoying for Congress coming to power in Centre. It is only/always a good relation between NDA & UPA that can give good administration. Commenting on a any particular party heavily will make him a permanent enemy/ active enemy. So writers please give healty comments & do not bark.

Even though iam a BJP supporter.....this verdict of 09 is a path breaker...even though I was dissappointed with BJP performance...was quite happy that the congress has the upper hand in the UPA compared to last rule....Rahul Gandhi is really proving too hot to handle for the other parties...was quite impressive......The BJP has to come out of its religious sentiments and focus on development...the Congress has to put it''s foot down and refuse to the silly demand's of the allies(especially the sly DMK)....If they don't listen...chuck them out....there are parties ready to offer unconditional support....Hope this Congress rule will be better than the previous one......Hope Rahul is different in his idea's than his mother.........wishing Manmohan very best of luck......

Mr Nagesh Nayak, victory and defeat are to the convenience of BJP. BJP does not believe in peoples'' mandate, does not believe in constitution. I think all parties and their candidates must file affidavit in the supereme court pledging their belief and trust in Indian constitution. LK Advani before the results said, that this time people would vote NDA back to power. But when the verdict came, he is refusing to accept it. Is it democracy? BJP lost mainly due to projecting Advani as PM in waiting, who has done nothing to this country, but to create communual tension and deviding India, secondly they lost due to projecting Modi as next PM of 2014, Varun''s hate speech, bhay ho campaign and calling Dr Singh as nikkamma, a weak P.M. and bashing a efficient and functionary Prime Minister.

People are not interested in bringing back money from swiss bank, as they only knew this money would end up in these polotician''s and their relations bank account. The common man wanted peace, food, employment, stability and prosperity. They have voted for peace, security and pluralism. They didnt vote for one India, Ram Temple, Ram Sethu or Babri masjid. Thats the bottom line, but truth is bitter and hard to digest. Nagesh Mam, now election is over and let us learn from our mistakes and bring back mangalore to its past glory of secular and peaceful place. Lets not fight. At the end of the day, no politician would suffer. Only the common man is loser and sufferer.

I don''t understand why many writers in here are so much interested in supporting Congress. Congress might be leading party, but it doesnt have its own clear majority & has to depend on others. Manmohan is a good adminstrator, but praising gandhi family is too much. At same time NDA has given good adminstration in past, so Congress need not be praised too much. Only thing is presently it is Congress turn to rule.

Nagesh Mamu, By applying your own distorted logic I agree that Yeddi & Co rigged the polls in Karnataka, Modi & Co in Gujarat and the others in MP, Himachal and Chattisgarh. If not congress would have won over 300 seats on its own. Therefore from the next elections we should go back to the ballot paper as you suggested. Are you happy now?. If you don''t like beer then please have some toddy and cool yourself down. This way you can help our local industry. Jai Ho. Please also offer the VRS to Modi, Togadia, Ashok Sahu, Varun Gandhi and Anant Kumar Hegde, because as long as they are in the BJP your party can forget the PM''s seat in Delhi.

Dear Prime Minister, congratulation on being elected as the prime ministerial candidate and I hope you will understand that the people of this country want peace in this region. The law and order in the county is doomed to failure. The need of the hour is to reform the current British law which is one of the worst in the world. There are a lot of loopholes in the law and thereby allowing the perpetrator to escape without any punishments. This trend needs to changed and also the policy on terrorism. All the terrorists who terrorize people in one or the other way should be treated as same and the guilty should be punished without any delays.

Moreover, there are a lot of cases pending in different courts, which should be handed over to a new judicial system, which should work round the clock. We need a judicial system which does not distinguish people based on their creed, color, wealth and should be professional to give their verdict on time. The police department needs to be rehabilitated and the policemen need to be trained on humanity and politeness.

Common people should be treated as human beings when they visit the police stations and the following measures need to be followed. 1. Respect people who visit the police station to file their complaints 2. Keep politicians away from the police 3. The policemen should speak to the visitors politely 4. Offer seats to the visitors and assure them with necessary action on their complaints, etc. If these steps are followed then the common people will have faith on the police department and when the common people cooperate with the police to catch the culprits, the law and order of the country will be steady.

Let us pray to the almighty that with this ELECTION RESULTS the down fall of Fascist Saffron Brigade begins and they are never given a chance to reappear again.
