Mangaluru, Jul 2: City police commissioner Sandeep Patil, has been taking all kinds of preventive measures to arrest the rising incidents of cattle theft in the district.

The officer has already taken this issue seriously and formed special squads to detect cases and nab the offenders, besides increasing night patrolling frequency and also keeping a close eye on offenders and the activity with which they are involved.

On Tuesday July 2, the police commissioner rounded up 102 cattle theft offenders with previous offences against their names, besides getting to know about their present status and checking their current activity. Meanwhile notorious offenders like Saddam, Faisal, Hakim and Dawood were interrogated and issued with a strict warning from the police commissioner.

Illegal cattle trafficking has been creating headache for the officials as it results in skirmishes between the traffickers and the Hindu activists sometimes. In some cases, there have been charges of highhandedness on the part of those who detect and intercept cattle traffickers. It has also come to light that illegal slaughterhouses have been functioning at many places with impunity. A number of people are in prison either relating to running illegal slaughterhouses, cattle theft, or beating up cattle traffickers. Protests also are organized relating to such incidents. There have been charges that those who transport cattle legally also face harsh action. It may be recalled that on Monday, minister U T Khader, had called upon the police to stop illegal cattle trafficking and to deal with the offenders sternly.

One hopes that with his efforts, the police commissioner would be able to stop illegal cattle trafficking, which has developed into a burning issue since sometime, and ensure that peace settles down in Dakshina Kannada district.
