UAE bans pay-per-use data, consumers have to 'explicitly request' for new data package

Dubai, Jul 5: UAE Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) has instructed telecom operators, Etisalat and du to discontinue their 'pay-per-use data plans', unless it is 'explicitly requested' by the consumers.

The TRA on Thursday through its official twitter account announced, "In order to protect the subscribers from excessive charges of the service 'Pay-per-use data', TRA instructed the operators (@dutweets and @etisalat ) to discontinue this service unless the subscriber explicitly requests it from the operator."

At present the two main telecom operators in UAE, Etisalat and DU offer Data-on-demand which allow their respective subscribers to pay by the minute to access mobile data. All that the customer has to do to subscribe to the offer is to simply dial a certain number and the service gets immediately activated. The trouble starts when the user forgets to unsubscribe or stop the service, he/she will keep getting charged till the service is cancelled.

As per Khaleej times, Etisalat has sent a text message to its subscribers saying: 'Great news! No more bill shocks on data! To prevent unexpected charges, pay-as-you-go data has been blocked from July 1. For on-demand mobile internet, please dial *800# and use Play on Demand for only 5 fils/min."
