Udupi: District Congress pays homage to former MLA Gopal Bhandary

Udupi, Jul 6: District Congress committee held a condolence meeting on Saturday, July 6 at the Congress Bhavan in the city to pay homage to the former MLA of Karkala Gopal Bhandary, who died of cardiac arrest.

Speaking about the deceased Gopal Bhandary, M A Gafoor, general secretary of KPCC telling said, “He lived a simple life, though he was a former MLA. He was brought up from the level of a villager. He strengthened the booths and local bodies of the party at the village level. He took a major role in implementing land reforms in the village.

“Gopal Bhandary was a little disappointed with the leadership in the Congress party. Four years ago, he was diagnosed with cardiac-related problem. According to the post mortem report, his health status was deteriorated completely and the blood vessels were blocked resulting in a massive cardiac arrest. Even a tablet, which he took, was not digested.



Remembering the last day of Gopal Bhandary, a teary-eyed Gafoor said, “Bhandary forced me to come with him. But I did not go. He might have had a clue that, he needs a companion during his travel.” He further said that Gopal Bhandary might have neglected his health as he was actively involved in all party activities.”


“He is the best example of how a politician can live a life beyond politics and was secular. So people of all classes and political parties have participated in his funeral rites to pay their last tribute to him. He always used to motivate youths to come forward in the political ladder,” said Gafoor.

District Congress President Ashok Kumar Kodavoor said, “Gopal Bhandary was a secular leader and understood the ground reality. He does not have single black mark in his career. I had a close relationship with him and shared some advice on strengthening the party from the grass root level and building the party from zero. He was a very kind person and model for all other budding politicians.”


A two-minute silence was observed in memory and respect of the departed soul by the gathering and floral tributes was offered to the portrait of Gopal Bhandary.


Bhujanga Shetty, Janardhan Thonse, Mairmady Suresh Shetty, Naveenchandra Shetty Kaup, Bhaskar Rao Kidiyur, Veronica Cornelio, Chandrika Shetty, Satish Amin Padukere, Prakhyath Shetty, Jyothi Hebbar, Shyamala Bhandary, Harish Kini, Diwakar Shetty and others were present.
