Udupi, Jul 9: Though it was cloudy Sunday and weekend, the members of ICYM and YCS youth’s team got a first-hand experience of working in the paddy fields as they planted paddy saplings in the slushy paddy fields at Katapady here on July 7.
The programme was organized by ICYM and YCS unit of St Vincent Paul Church, Manipur, Katapady.
This activity was organized not just for fun, but for creating awareness, understanding the process and importance of agriculture. Today, youth are moving away from the agriculture and searching out white collar jobs. Hence, it was organised to make them understand rich culture and tradition.
Saplings were planted in the field, which belonging to late Lawrence family in Manipur.
Lawrence family has engaged in agriculture activity since long time now. His wife Marselin D’Souza herself got into the field and planted paddy saplings, accompanied by her grand children.
Fr Ronson D’Souza, parish priest of St Vincent Paul Church, also enjoyed the moment in slushy field.
Senior farmer Leslie Suvares and locals were present.
Livia Periera, president, ICYM unit, Melisha D’souza, secretary, Wilfred Lewis, animator and Brian Koria were present.
