Puttur, Jul 9: Alerted by the gross misuse of cellphones by the students of a private college in the town which gave rise to catastrophic consequences, Uppplinangady police jumped into action and raided colleges in its jurisdiction on Monday July 8. Acting under instructions to ensure that students do not use mobile phones during college hours, they took into possession 24 cellphones from college students.

A police team led by Uppinangady police sub-inspector, Nandakumar, raided the first grade college and PU college at Uppinangady. During the checking, they found 24 cellphones which had been illegally brought into the classes by students. Having prior knowledge that some students have the habit of depositing their cellphones in petty shops within the vicinity of the college, the police raided such shops too.

After the raid, the sub-inspector warned the students about the possible ill-affected of senseless use of cellphones and becoming victims of drugs like ganja by student community. He also explained about the far-reaching consequences of viewing and spreading obscene video clips and photos. He requested the student community to desist from spoiling their bright future by indulging in wrong things.

The police had asked the students to visit the police station with their parents to take back the cellphones. Some brought their parents to the stations. It is said that a few students brought people known to them to the police station as they feared that their parents might get angry, and introduced them as parents. The police, who were aware of such tricks in advance, said that the parents should bring documents certifying them to be the parents of the students. Therefore, the plan of these students failed and they had to return home and bring their actual parents to the station.
