Prenatal alcohol consumption fatal, 44 per cent nurses think otherwise

New Delhi, Jul 31: Recent study is discouraging women from taking advice from midwives and nurses regarding prenatal alcohol consumption. Over 44 per cent of midwives and nurses do not think there is any harm in prenatal alcohol consumption on certain occasions.

Unfortunately, the midwives and nurses fail to determine the harmful effects of alcohol on the foetus. The effects range from facial anomalies to neurological problems.

In a study published in 'Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research', over 578 responses were analysed. It stated that one in three respondents screen women for alcohol use. The midwives and nurses who supported consumption use did not screen the pregnant women.

According to John Hannigan, author of the study, the research expressed the need to understand the health effects of alcohol use during pregnancy, the importance of screening and the most reliable screening tools to use, to avoid complications for mother and kid.
