Abu Dhabi, Sep 4: The police, on Tuesday, announced that cameras will be installed on all 7,000 school buses in the emirate to catch motorists ignoring the stop sign.

As reported by Khaleej Times, head of traffic studies at the Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate, Abdullah Al Ghafeli said, "The project will be done in phases. Overtaking a bus when the stop sign arm is extended is illegal as the sign indicates that students are boarding or getting off the bus."

In the academic year 2018-19, 3,664 motorists were fined in Abu Dhabi for overtaking a school bus when the stop sign arm was extended. The drivers were slapped a penalty of Dh 1,000 fine and 10 black points. School bus drivers who did not display the signs when picking up or dropping off students were also penalised and the penalty is Dh 500 and six black points.

Ghafeli said, "The safety of students is a top priority for us and we are doing everything possible to boost it. All motorists should adhere to the UAE traffic law."
