Udupi: Sea Erosion - Proposal to State to Sanction Rs 2 crore

Udupi, Jul 12: BJP state president and MP D V Sadananda Gowda said that he would discuss with Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and convince him to sanction Rs 2 crore to carry out temporary relief works at places hit by sea erosion from state government's Natural Calamity Fund.
Speaking to media persons on Saturday July 11 after visiting the sea erosion affected areas in Muloor and hearing the grievances of the locals, D V said that the government has ordered district administration to take necessary relief measures to control the extent of damages afflicted by sea erosion in the district. In order to discuss on the matter, a meeting of all the MLAs of the district chaired by home minister and district in-charge Dr V S Acharya will be held on Sunday July 12, he said.
The construction works of temporary protection wall at Padukere has already begun and temporary relief works in places affected by sea erosion such as Muloor, Kaipunjal, Udyavar Kanakodi and Tenka Yermal will be completed by another 10 days, said D V.
In the backgorund of lack of favourable response from the centre on the memorandum being submitted by state government and people of coastal areas since 1996 demanding lasting solution effects to sea erosion, a delegation comprising CM, district in-charge of both DK and Udupi districts, MPs and MLAs of the both the districts will be taken to the centre to draw its attention towards the issue, he assured. A proposal worth 298 crore to construct 45-km-long protection wall and repair works to 25-km-long old protection wall has been placed before the centre, he added.
He further assured that permanent works to control sea erosion will be undertaken well before rainy season next year in joint opearation by centre and the state government. Kaup MLA Lalaji Mendon speaking on the occasion said that the first phase of the construction of the temporary protection wall has already begun in Padukere and a proposal to undertake works in the 500-metre area in the region has been submitted to the government, he said.
