Mangalore, Jul 13: Minister for Higher Education Arvind Limbavali said here on Sunday, July 12 that the Department of Higher Education would discontinue the practice of posting officers of Indian Forest Service and Indian Police Service as Registrars (administration) and officers of Karnataka Administrative Service as Registrars (evaluation) of universities.

Addressing college teachers at a convention on higher education at St. Aloysius College here, the Minister said that academics would be appointed to these posts.

He said that students and teachers had demanded that academics be posted to those two key posts in universities as they could understand the issues better and address them.

Limbavali said that the Secretary of the Department of Higher Education had written to the Vice-Chancellors of universities to send the lists of senior academics in their respective universities who can work as Registrars. A committee of the government would screen the names and postings would be made on the recommendation of the committee.

Adalat for students

Limbavali said that the department would hold education adalats for students on the lines of adalats conducted for college teachers. The first education adalat for students would be held in Mangalore shortly.

Along with it, the department would organise the next education adalat for teachers in Mangalore.

He said that like teachers students too might be having problems regarding getting scholarships from various government departments. They might be having other problems.

Limbavali reiterated that the government would introduce a common admission system for admission of students to degree colleges from the next academic year.

The Minister said that the government would examine the demand of teachers on implementing the revised University Grants Commission (UGC) pay scale to teachers before this September end.
