Aloysian Alumni in the UAE Contribute Towards Education Fund

UAE, Jul 15: Aloysian Alumni in the UAE recently donated Indian Rupees Five Lakhs Fifty Thousand towards their existing scholarship fund for deserving students pursuing their studies at  St. Aloysius College Mangalore.

Aloysians Alumi,  pioneers in forming an Alumni Association outside India contributed this amount from the Aloysian/Agnesian get-together held in February 2009 at the Sharjah Wanderers Club.

The amount was handed over to Fr. Swebert D’Silva – Principal of the college by Abdul Majeed, James Mendonca and Lawrence Mendonca –  Members of the Organizing Committee during their visit to the College. Fr. D’Silva acknowledged the contribution handed over by the UAE Alumni and thanked them for their effort and generous gesture.  The combined get-together was held in February under the chairmanship of Victor Sydney D’Souza and was a huge success.
 
The Aloysian Alumni have been contributing towards various projects of the College from funds generated  during their Alumni gatherings since several years.



The first alumni meet was held in 1997  - thanks to the vision of Jerome Pereira who initiated the idea of Alumni gatherings in the UAE with the support of  likeminded Aloysians based in UAE and since then the event has gathered popularity and is held once in two years along with Agnesians.

Since 1997 Aloysian Alumni in the UAE have contributed a total amount of Indian Rs. 17, 63,581/- towards various causes .

In a communiqué the UAE Aloysian Alumni thanked their sponsors and well wishers for making this possible to achieve their goal in contributing towards their Alma Mater for worthy causes.

    Being a former student of St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, it behooves me to compliment UAE’s ex-Aloysians for their benevolence when people in general are encumbered by the cares of life. I could identify, from the photograph accompanying the Daijiworld report on this occasion, at least one of my former best friends, whose fingerprints are all over the philanthropic work of ex-Aloysians in the UAE. I congratulate all those who contributed to this noble cause. Let’s be short on rhetoric and long on substance!

    Great deed indeed from Middle East. St Aloysius should reorganized into St Aloysius University and offer Energy and Environmental Engineering programs, which will attract much more funds from US. There is NO engineering school in Karnanataka State (or to that matter in South India) which provides for Energy Engineering and Environmental Engineering programs.

    These engineering programs are needed to support Mangalore SEZ. Mangalore SEZ has advertised one Environmental Engineering position for the entire complex. One engineer can not do the job protecting the environment. Permiting and licensing process requires review and implementation of complex regulations. This is where St Aloysius comes in. Our prayers for St Aloysius to expand the school in to a full university status and provide for engineering programs, including medical school.

    It is wonderful to see our community all over the world trying to return to St.Aloysius in some measure for the education that we have received from the hands of The Jesuit Fathers of Sacred Memory. I too happen to be a member of APNA which is trying to help SAC.

    Recently at a General Body Meeting held at Long Island in U.S.A. the board has been reconstituted with Father Ozzie Mascarenahs as the Chairperson and Dr. Dinker Rao as the President and some of us as members of the Board.

    It is good to see familiar faces at the handing over of the check for Rs.5,50,000/- to Father Swebert who is doing a fine job as The Principal of Our Alma Mater. Kudos to the organizers of the Association to help St. Al. Joe Gonsalves
