Margaret Alva Appointed Uttarakhand Governor

New Delhi, July 18 (IANS): Uttarakhand Governor B.L. Joshi was late Saturday transferred and appointed as the Uttar Pradesh governor in place of T.V. Rajeshwar, whose term has expired, a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said. Veteran Congress leader Margaret Alva was named to succeed Joshi.

Alva had lost the April-May Lok Sabha elections from Karnataka's Uttara Kannada constituency. A few months before the elections, she had been sacked as a Congress general secretary for stating that the party ticket was "sold" during the state assembly elections in May.

One other new governor was named - former central minister Jagannath Pahadia replacing A.R. Kidwai on the completion of his term in Haryana - and three others were shifted.

Jharkhand Governor Syed Sibtey Razi has been transferred and appointed the governor of Assam "for the remainder of his term" and has been replaced by Nagaland Governor K. Sankaranarayanan, the communique said.

The Assam Raj Bhawan had been vacant since incumbent Shiv Charan Mathur died in a hospital here June 25.

Devendra Nath Dwivedi will take over as the Gujarat governor when incumbent Nawal Kishore Sharma completes his term July 23, the communique added.

Both Rajeshwar, a former director of the Intelligence Bureau, and Razi had courted controversey during their terms, with the former being involved in frequent run-ins with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati and her predecessor Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Razi was in the news for all the wrong reasons when he last year swore in Jharkhand Mukti Morcha head Shibu Soren as chief minister of a government that was propped up with heavy outside support even though he was not a member of the state assembly. Soren resigned earlier this year after failing to get elected to the assembly.

It was widely expected that H.R. Bharadwaj, who was dropped as the law minister when the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance assumed power for a second time after the general elections, would be given a gubernatorial assignment. The name of Shivraj Patil, dropped as home minister in the wake of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, had also been doing the rounds.

Whether her appointment is politically motivate or influenced, no one can deny that she deserved it. She has been in the forefront of national politics for long, even before the advent of Sonia Gandhi. She has held various positions both within the party and govt and has shouldered them quite ably. Regarding Sonia''s influence to promote her to governor''s post, there is nothing wrong...When NDA was ruling India, did they appoint anyone outside BJP as governors...NDA in its 5 years had appointed/transferred/replace almost 23 governors and all of them were either long-standing BJP leaders or supporters. Most of them were defeated in the elections and were then rehabilitated. For that matter Juastice Rama Jois was appointed as Karnataka governor. What was his contribution? He was and is a BJP supporter. His contribution to judiciary is immense. But it was not the only criteria. The clinching factor was that he was BJP man. Let''s not crib for everything...It''s we the voters who have given politicians this license. Whether it is BJP or Congress, we want honest people to rule us. We need not their cast and creed or party but their vision and experience for nation-building. Most of us here feel quite jealous about Margaret not becuase she represents Congress...even if she was in BJP we would have had similar problems..It''s very much in ourselves that we cannot tolerate a woman climbing up the rungs...However progressive we call ourselves and whatever our education, we feel quite happy and satisfied when woman limit herself to household activities. The moment she crosses threshold, we are ready with thousands of reasons to accuse her. Our India society has done this with Sonia Gandhi, Sushma Swaraj and a quite a few others...There are a few exceptions for this such as Pratibha Patil, Indira Gagndhi etc...but they are largely due to individual brilliance and efforts rather than society''s concern...That is why our women reservation bill is still pending in parliament for time immemorial...Congress, BJP or anyone...all of them are birds of the same feather when it comes to equal rights to women and their welfare...

Thank you Madam Sonia ji , Very few people in power remember their old staff even if they have spoken against the party at the heat of the moment and their low times in politics , but Soniya Ji you have the true sprite of forgive and forget , this type of approche can put a self resceptfull person into shame and work even better then their past history. Madam Maggie you were clean political person so please now learn from your mistake, and while you are on top, please do not forget our Mangalore for its progress congrats !!

Dear editor, it is very sorry state that, Madam Sonia''s influence has made Margaret Alva a Governor. A leader who does not win people''s faith can grab power by entering backdoor. Sad indeed. This act of Sonia has denied the post for most deserved candidates in our nation. I am sure, Janaradhana Poojary is standing next waiting for Sonia''s call to become governor of another state!

Congratulations? Nice way to get a post, first fight for selfish motives, then lose elections, and if not fit for anything in public life, get a Governor's post, today this post itself has become a mockery, she has not done anything to karnataka, she only was fighting for her family to get seats, couldn''t win her own an now a governor, all the best Maggi Bhai, atleast you can retire with dignity and peace

I have had the pleasure of knowing not only Her Excellency Margaret Alva but also her well known Father-in-law Joachim Alva as also Violet Alva. Margaret Alva has indeed had a very clean political career and has been a very honest, sincere, hardworking and an efficient person. She has held different positions with Government and because of a clean past history she has been assigned with this coveted position. I just Ms. Alva and congratulated her on this envious position. She has brought honour to The Community and has made Mangalore proud. Kudos to you Margaret and may your tenure be long and fruitful J.G.
