BJP's Goutham Kumar elected new Bengaluru Mayor

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Oct 1: BJP corporator M Goutham Kumar was on elected as the 53rd Mayor of Bengaluru on Tuesday, October 1.

Goutham Kumar defeated his Congress rival R S Sathyanarayana in the election held at the civic corporation office.

Ruling BJP won the mayoral election, defeating Congress with the support of Independents.

Kumar, a two-time corporator from Jogupalya in the city's eastern suburbs, polled 126 votes as against 112 by Dattatreya Temple councillor Sathyanarayana.

The new Mayor originally hails from Rajasthan and belongs to the Jain community.

BJP councillor C R Ramamohan Raju of Bommanahalli was elected Deputy Mayor, defeating Shakti Ganapathi Nagar councillor Ganagamma Rajanna by 13 votes.

Raju secured 129 votes and Rajanna 116 votes.

BJP wrested the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts from the Congress and Janata Dal-S (JDS) after a 4-year hiatus when the council's 5-year term began in 2015.

In the 198-ward city civic corporation, though the BJP has 101 corporators, the Congress (76) and JD-S (14) shared the posts during the last 4 years with the support of Independents and others.

"The BJP got support of Independents and others to defeat the Congress, as the JD-S did not extend its support to the former," another official said.

As the city's assembly legislators and parliamentary members are part of the 257-member electoral college with voting rights, they also participated in the mayoral poll on party lines.

Of the 257 members, including Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha MPs, MLAs and MLCs from the city, 249 were present for the mayoral election.

The disqualification of the four Congress and one JD-S legislators on July 25-28 for resigning and allegedly defying their party's whip, cost both the opposition parties dearly in the absence of their votes.

karnataka state BJP is worser than the congress and jds when it comes to internal rivalry.

The rivalry between Anant kumar and Yediyurappa was well known. Now the new twist is the open rift between yeddy and b l santhosh.

as far as feku and daku are there in center, no chance for state bjp leaders, if they are not from RSS backgraound to thrive.

What do you mean by "marwadi" he is resident of Bangalore and has every right to fight for Mayor election as he is one of the corporators.

Till now BJP was in oppostion in BBMP and coilation was the ruling party.

Regarding Vatal what right he has to oppose? Just check up all so called kannada organizations office bearer children study in English Medium schools.

It is all eye wash and to get noticed they start pro kannada organisations. Just see how all politicians of Karnataka give interview to TV? They speak more than 80%in english

Vatal Nagagraj is right in protesting BJP electing Gautam Kumar a Marwadi Jain a candidate of Amit Shah. Shame on you BSY, Eswarappa, Laxman Savadi, Ashok, and BJP leaders you have no guts to elect a Kannadiga to the post of Mayor. It shows there is rift between CM Yadyurappa and RSS Gen Secretary B.L.Santosh who is playing all dirty games through Nalini Kumar Kateel.
