Mangaluru: Prof Santosh Poojary invents biodiesel from used cooking oil

Mangaluru, Oct 1: A unique invention made by assistant professor of an engineering college in the district is making waves. Used cooking oil, which is detrimental for health, is used by this professor to produce eco-friendly biodiesel.

Dr Santhosh Poojary, who is an assistant professor with Nitte Engineering College and also the scientific assistant for the biological fuel center in the college (a government project), has invented biodiesel from cooking oil that is used for frying food. He is the first person to have made this unique invention. This biodiesel is being used in some city buses, school and college buses and government vehicles also.

Cooking oil used for frying is purchased at the rate of Rs 20 per liter in the Nitte biological fuel center. From this oil, around 90% of biodiesel is obtained depending upon the quality of the oil used for frying. This is sold at the rate of Rs 55 per liter. The fuel expenses for the owners of diesel engine vehicles come down considerably due to this. The invention center in the college has the capacity of producing 600 to 800 liters of biodiesel per month and is getting good response from the customers.

Dr Santhosh Poojary says, "Initially we used biodiesel for our college goods vehicle and it was successful. Later, we started using this in two to three buses of our college. Now other school and colleges are also taking this biodiesel for use in their buses. Recently, the biodiesel was used in the Tata Sumo and Bolero vehicles belonging to Karkala Taluk Panchayat under the order of the government. Dilraj Alva, president of Dakshina Kannada Bus Owners' Association has bought 1,000 liters of biodiesel from us for use in city buses. People are using it for tractor and tillers also."

"Biodiesel that is produced from the cooking oil used for frying is cheaper than the normal diesel available in the market. As this emits very low amount of toxic substances, it is eco-friendly also. Engine will last long because of the use of biodiesel. Instead of spoiling health by using the cooking oil for repeated frying, it is better to convert it as biodiesel, which will help the environment also," said Dr Santhosh Poojary, proud inventor of bio diesel.

    Research suggests that heating cooking oil beyond a certain temperature causes carcinogens. Maybe the reason for so many cancer cases in India is because of reused oil till it loses it properties. But even then we would probably mix some fresh oil to it and keep using.
    Same as garbage, cooking oil can be collected from fast food outlets like KFC, McDonalds and also from the local baje makers in special bins and then recycled into Biofuel.
    Congratulations to Prof. Poojary for trying out this experiment in Mangalore and raising awareness.

    According to Government data, India consumes 25 million tonnes of edible oil annually, of which 15 mil tonnes is imported.

    Even if a small segment of this (post-use for cooking) is converted to biodiesel, it could help enormously.

    But a major challenge might be to collect the used oil in areas outside major cities.

    Sadly it is not his invention it was already in use in UK more than 10years ago. please watch a documentary made by BBC called Planet mechanics . Collection of the used oil is the major challenge. It would be better if some NGO's get involved.

    It is the hard fact that even we also worked for past 8-10 years by the help of Karnataka State Government Bioenergy Development Board and Nitte Education Trust to optimize Biodiesel production process from many non-edible oil seeds, waste oils including used cooking oil but we didn’t ventured into media exploration in our earlier days.

    It is sad thing that people know what is happening in UK in previous decade but don’t know what is happening in Mangalore. Even though Biodiesel invention history dates back to 1853, no one tried these sources in our region till last decade for realistic usage of Biodiesel and production process parameters also found variable compared to other part of the world. Our Biodiesel research is also been published in European, Malaysian and Indian journals and also presented in the United States Biodiesel Conference, where they appreciated our unique efforts. Let us spread the awareness among the people about the usage of Biodiesel, as like in field we have challenges to make it a reality but mere knowledge is not sufficient.

    Cooking oil is plant based. Why go through cooking oil and then diesel? Why not produce diesel directly from plant itself as done by using corn in the US?

    Dear Mr.Ruben Pinto, NO doubut you will be the next" Nobel prize nominee" and get it. Dear pls under stand the common factor of burning diesel fuel. Flue gas of diesel engine consists of Carbon monoxide, Hydrocarbon,Particulates, Nitrogen oxide and Sulpher Oxide. Bio diesel made of Edible oil or used frying oil do not consists of sulpher oxide and other poisons contents.
