Mangaluru: Konkani folk artiste Gopal Gowda passes away

Mangaluru, Oct 2: Famous Konkani folk artiste M Gopal Gowda died due to cardiac arrest on Wednesday, October 2.

He was 64.

Born in 1955, Gopal Gowda was an accomplished Kudmi folk artiste. His troupe was well-known in the world of folklore with more than 200 performances rendered in India. Gowda's research on Kudmi folklore is remarkable.


Gowda was the first ever Kudmi writer. Many of his research write-ups had appeared in Konkani and Kannada periodicals, research magazines and in text books. Gowda had presented his research papers at several seminars and symposiums and presented shows on Doordarshan. His troupe had been granted Scholarships by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

Gowda was awarded with Dakshina Kannada district Rajyostava Award in 2014 and 'Janapad Prashasti'in 2002 by the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Akademi. He had been honoured by nearly 20 cultural organizations. He had won Mandd Sobhann Kalakar Puraskar in 2017.

He was a guide and a resource person for several folklore enthusiasts who would  come to him from distant lands like Germany, Switzerland,  Canada and England.

His writings and publications are a treasure-trove of Kudmi history, dialects, sects, their culture with traditions and beliefs.

He worked at St Aloysius College Konkani Institute for many years. He knew the names of all Konkani books by heart. He was warm and friendly with people who visited the Konkani Institute and always shared his knowledge.

    Gopal Gowda’s death is a great loss to Konkani culture and Kudumi culture.
    He was a sincere man. He had his whole self fixed on Kudumi way of life.
    Tremendous research he has done in that field. Someone with research bent
    could do further research and continue the legacy of Shri Gopal Gowda.
    His simplicity is seen and felt everywhere. Even in big functions his way of dress has been very simple. May his soul rest in peace.

    A n accomplished expert in his field, he possessed qualities and principles disappearing today. It is indeed a shock that he passed away so suddenly. A person of integrity and great humility. He never failed to be polite and humane to any person seeking information at the College Konkani Institute or Aloysium. Indeed a loss to Konkani culture. May his dear soul rest in God and his near and dear be consoled. Sad day indeed.

    Very sad and shocking news of Sri Gopal Gowda's demise. He was a great Kudmi folklore artiste cum writer who had introduced Kudmi culture, tradition , 'Gumat and Kolata' to the entire Konkani world. Being an ardent lover of Konkani language and literaure, he worked for Konkani Institute , St.Aloysius College for several years. He was instrumental in updating Konkani Library and bringing out 'O'mar Konknni' a bimonthly regularly. May his soul rest in Peace.

    He was a good person. Totally dedicated to Konkani language. Even though very talented and frequently awarded, he was very humble. Worked for many years at the Konkani Institute of St Aloysius College. Contributed a great deal in terms of writing, editing and printing the magazine AMAR KONKANI and he was a prolific exponent of Konkani folk culture.. Konkani Institute will miss him. May he rest in peace.

    Very sad to hear about the sudden demise of Mr Gopal Gowda. I was fortunate to work with him in St Aloysius College, Konkani Institute. He did his work with great devotion and dedication. Although he was an authority in Kudmi culture and tradition he remained always a simple person. May his soul rest in peace!

    Condolences to family of Gopala Gowda on his sudden demise.

    I have met Gopala several times in St Aloysius College Konkani Institute and was always helpful. Gopala was a dedicated librarian and tried his best to maintain the of all resources in the St Aloysius College Konkani Institute library.

    AT Lobo family had given several plays and story books in original form to the St Aloysius College Konkani Institute several years ago and Gopala made sure these items are well maintained.

    We will miss him for his service and timely help, whenever requested to him.

    RIP Gopala Gowda.

    It is a shocking news indeed. Gopalanna was true KONKANI worker and true lover of KONKANI culture. He was the doyen of KONKANI Kudbi culture was instrumental in guiding many scholars to kudbi culture and folk traditions. Kudubi Folk traditions are rich with folk narratives that offer so many insights. Gopala Gowda was a catalyst in connecting to the rich culture. May his Soul Rest in Peace.
