Mangaluru, Oct 2: Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Team lifted the ‘Brand Mangaluru Friendship Cricket Tourney’ trophy. The match was organised by Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Union commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2 at Nehru Maidan.

The match was dedicated to late Mangaluru TV journalist Nagesh Padu, who lost his life to dengue this year.

The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Team was the runner-up. A total of seven teams participated in the match. In the finals, the DC Team was the first to bat. In six overs, they scored 32 runs and lost 4 wickets. The Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Team scored 33 runs and lost one wicket and was declared the winner.

Man of the series award was given to Sudheer from DC’s team. The man of the match was awarded to Sandeep from Mangalore University team. University team’s Mallikarjun Swamy won the best bowler award while Kiran won the best batsman award.

Karavali Institutions president Ganesh Rao handed over the trophies to the winners.

“Mangaluru is known to be a peaceful place and it is our duty to protect its natural resources and maintain harmony in the society. Youth today are falling prey to drugs and we need to strive to put an end to this menace,” he advised.

He also promised to help Nagesh Padu’s family.

Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Union president Srinivas Nayak Indaje, DCP Arunamshu Giri, senior journalist Manohar Prasad, Canara Bank General Manager Yogish Acharya, Mangaluru Smart City director Mohammed Nazeer, Mangalore University Physical Education Department director Kishore Kumar and others were present.
