Udupi, Jul 25: Rajya Sabha member Oscar Fernandes visited the sea erosion affected areas here on Saturday July 25.

Speaking to media persons on the occasion Oscar said that Kerala-model protection wall should be constructed in this part of the coastal region to effectively counter damages due to sea erosion. He further assured that he will work towards setting up a separate Mangalore railway division.

Former MLA Vasant V Salian, who was accompanying Fernandes said that an agreement to construct protection wall using French Technology had been entered into with two-third of grants from France and one-third through the central government and subsequently A B Vajpayee government at the centre promised Rs 50 crore to counter sea erosion in the coastal area of Karnataka. At present Rs 265 crore is required to counter sea erosion in coastal Karnataka and BJP government in the state seem to be not very interested in pursuing the matter with the centre, he alleged.

Former MP Vinay Kumar Sorake, Congress leader Mohiuddin Bava, Congress district president M A Gafoor, zilla panchayat Sarasu Bangera and former taluk panchayat member Ignatius D’Souza was present.

Some years back Mr.Vasanth Salian, the then minister of port & fisheries had went to France to study the protection method & later showed no sign of progress. Now, will be this time the attitude of Mr.Oscar Fernandes. People only need protection & not any political stunts. Hope this things dosn''t repeat & people wont be fooled.

Whatever stones we lay on shores will reduse the sea erosion butwill not stop the erosion. As the waves are variable in size and power erosion will be a continious process.Present beaches are protected with a unique idea of concrete louvers laid along the tidal waves which will protect and recover the beaches.Concret louvers laid along the tides will initialy allow the water and sand pass through the louvers and when the water looses its momentoum on recess will deposit the sand on the opposit side of the louver. This will creat a gradual slope towards the sea from the shore and within three to four years the shore will be automatically retained, and also the impact of the wave force to the shore will be reduced.

This will creat a gradual slope instead of a sudden barrier, where the the impact would be minimised. This way we can stop the erosion and also can reclaim our shores.Full seasonal study backed with datas of wave hight and wave force will enable the engineers to design the louvers to esertain the weight and size of the louvers. This way we can not only save our shores but also change the direction of the sea waves.

Bravo, our leaders, politicians and their followers wake up only during rainy season along with their family members to show the public particularly to those who suffered due to sea erosion. We must honour them in an open Maidan for their personnel vist, a real shame to all these people elect personalities, Our country will not improve with all these type of people, we must have a federal government rather than state government, then only our country will be without corruption.

It rains every year and sea erosion takes place every year and its going to happen in the future also unless some long term action is taken.Everybody, including politicians are aware of this and whats the use of just visiting these places? How many times they have visited such places in the past?Just to keep themselves busy or keep them selves in news.Better to plan some long term action forgetting party and politics which will benifit the costal area and future generation to come.
