Mangalore, Jul 27:  R Dileep, additional superintendent of police, a familiar figure in his uniform, put forth a lesser-known facet of himself—that of a Mridangam player—in a concert organized at Town Hall on Sunday July 26, by the Sangeetha Bharathi Foundation.

R Dilip, ‘Vidwan’ in music studies, was accompanied by a percussion ensemble consisting of Pandit Ravindra Yavagal (Tabla), Vidwan Trichy K R Kumar (Ghatam), Kannur P K Kumar (Morsing) and Ustad Rafiq Khan (Sitar) in the programme called ‘Megha Sandhya’.

Dileep, who is from Bangalore, has previously served in the city and was recently transferred to the police training centre in Chennapatna.

“Policing is my profession, music is my passion”, he said. Dileep can also play the ‘kanjira’ and ‘tabla’ and comes from a family of musicians.

His mother is a gold medalist in music while his brother Deepak is a flutist. Dileep secured a senior grade in music from the state government at the age of 14.

Now, he teaches music to his children. Dileep has also received several awards in music during his school and college days and is an avid participant in concerts.

I had the opportunity to meet at a party at the former I.G.P.''s place in December of 2008. I found him to be a very versatile and an amenable person with a sicnerity of mind and heart. However I did not realise then that he was a musician oo. Kudos to you Dileep. Continue to be an inspiration to others. Joe Gonsalves
