M'lore: Palemar Reiterates Govt.’s Commitment for Stable, Pro-development Administration on I-Day

Mangalore, Aug 15: Dakshina Kannada district celebrated 62 years of independence with patriotic fervour. At the district-level Independence Day celebration held at Nehru Maidan in heart of the city with hoisting of Indian tricolour by district in-charge minister J Krishna Palemar on Saturday, August 15.
Delivering his Independence Day message, Palemar reiterated BJP’s commitment to provide stable and pro-development administration. He said that Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has taken steps to supply drinking water in corporation limits with development works of Rs 106 crore worth water supply works undertaken by Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environment Management Project completed.
Minister said that in the State Budget, due preference has been given to the development of coastal region and the setting up of Coastal Development Authority in this regard has been a bold move. As far as fishermen of the region are concerned, complete abolition of VAT for ice and the increase of diesel supplied to the fisher folks without sales tax from then existent 70,000 kilo litres to 75,000 kilo litres among others were the government’s achievement.
Palemar said that under the new project introduced for the year 2009-10 by the state government, to promote renewable energy and thus power increase power efficiency, a scheme was introduced to install solar-powered street lights under gram panchayat (GP) level. The GPs in DK have been given a target of installing 178 street lights for the year. State BJP government has lived up to its promise of pro-farmer administration by rightly facing challenges such as fertilizer issue and delayed monsoon standing by the welfare of the farmers, said Palemar. The pro-farmer sentiment was further reiterated by the government with the decision recognize Negilayogi, a poem authored by Rashtrakavi Kuvempu as raitageete and bhoomigeete and thereby sing it before every cultural functions organize by the government, he said.
On the occasion, freedom fighters were remembered. After hoisting the flag, police band played the national anthem. Minister received the guard of honour. Later `Jai bharatha jananiya tanujathe’, nadageete and `Negilayogi’ was sung by the students of various schools in the city. In the freedom parade, a total of 16 teams including police department, National Cadet Corps, Guides and Scouts and harat Seva Dal among others participated.
The representatives of six high schools comprising both government and private schools from the city were felicitated for securing 100 percent result in SSLC examinations. Students, who excelled at the state-level in both academics and extra-curricular activities, were honoured. Lokesh S Putran, a student from the city was honoured for his bravery during the celebration.
District administration in association with various sports organizations of the city organized Independence Cup Cricket Tournament. The tournament saw participation of teams representing various government departments as well as a journalists’ team.
