Mangalore: Tragic Accident Takes away Life of Dr Martina (27)

Mangalore: Tragic Accident Takes away Life of Dr Martina (27)
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Aug 18: In a tragic incident, Martina Shyamal Neeliyara (27), a faculty of A B Shetty Dental College here, lost her life in a freak accident on Monday night, August 17.

Martina came back after her duty hours, from her college located in Derlakatte near here, by the college bus. After getting down at Jyoti Circle in the city, she boarded a city bus to go home. As the bus was overcrowded, she reportedly, was standing on the edge near the footboard of the bus. Perhaps because of a sudden jerk caused when the driver applied the brakes, she was thrown on to the road and sustained grave injuries. Martina was shifted to a private hospital in the city immediately, but did not respond to treatments.

Martina was the daughter of Jacob Neeliyara, a planter residing on Kulshekhar Road in the city.  She is survived by parents, sisters, Dr Sheeba who is in UK, and Sheetal, working as a lecturer in St Agnes College in the city.

From eye witness accounts, Dr. Martina Shyamal Neeliyara was not standing on the foot board but was very much inside the bus. This unfortunate incident has taken place only because of rash and negligent driving. The drivers are reckless, ompeting with other buses in order to earn more , thus ignoring the safety of passengers.

Passengers being thrown out of the bus is not new and many have lost their lives. Only the family members will feel the agony. The RTO should make it compulsory that all the buses have doors. The Conductor should secure the door before the Driver moves the bus. most of the roads in mangalore do not have a foot path. At some places, where there was one, it has been removed to broaden the road.

So, it is equally dangerous to walk on the road, especially for the children, fearing being run over by an automobile. The Mangalore City Corporation is also equally responsible for this unfortunate accident.

Looking at the pathetic conditions of Mangalore city private buses, overloading, rash driving etc., the RTO should take immediate steps to check all passenger buses for permitted number of seats/standees, and if found guilty stringent measures should be taken.

It is right time to introduce KSRTC city buses at the earliest, we had enough of these private buses, the drivers are not concerned about passengers, they do not follow the road rules, conductors are rude & and behave very badly with passengers. I had a very bad experience when i travelled in one of these buses during my visit to M''lore last year. Bring on those KSRTC city buses.

My deepest condolences on demise of Dr Martina. May her soul rest in peace. I do agree buses are overcrowded during peak hours. Everybody in a hurry to reach home. RTO should seize the bus who is carrying passengers on footboard and also impose a heavy fine on passengers who are in footboard . This is very difficult in reality, but very necessary for the safety of public.

I sincerly feel that she should not have travelled in a over crowded bus. Ladies especially do not have the tricks to stand on the foot board carring bags in their hand. The RTO should make it compulsory for all busses to have doors for the busses like we have for government/luxury busses. The conductor must make sure the door is fully closed before the driver moves the bus. This will help both the passengers as well as the staff of the bus.

There are many such cases happening where the passenger gets thrown out of the bus before they settle in properly. What a loss to the family, just by a mere mistake of the driver and conductor. Only the family members will feel the agony. What is the use of filing a case and running behind the authorities to get justice. It will only be waste of time and money and mental torture to the parents. RTO PLEASE DO SOMETHING.

Oh!!! It’s really shocking news. Couple of months back a student was killed in an accident near Kankanady hospital, when she was returning after her admission to BSc Nursing. Yes, RTO personnel should take it seriously and act on it. May her soul rest in peace and I pray Almighty to give strength to her parents to bear this great shock.

I am really shocked to here this sad news. It shows how our politicians and RTA personnel are not taking care of helpless innocent commuters one like the departed soul. I think people themselves should initiate some sort of safety awareness among daily bus commuters. Especially in Mangalore all the buses are overcrowded and lack proper means of transport facility. We helpless citizen can convey only our deep condolences. May her soul rest in peace and I pray with Almighty to give strength to her parents to bear this great shock.

What a tragedy! What a sad way to die! A young and budding life is lost forever! May her soul rest in peace. While we cannot bring back Martina, may be we all can take a positive message out of this young lady`s death, and be secured and careful while travelling in the crowded buses and trains, etc.

Very sad!May lord keep the departed soul in peace & give her family enough strength to bear the pain. It is hightime now the RTA should wake up and arrange for extra buses during peak hours (normally 8AM to 10AM and 4PM to 7PM) in all routes. These buses can be delux buses with extra charges (like pushpak/hitech buses in bangalore) so that children, ladies, aged & physically challenged commuters will have no problems while travelling.
