Mangalore, Aug 20: Dakshina Kannada district units of Vishwa Hindu Parishat(VHP) and Bajrang Dal held a protest in front of the office of the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district here on Wednesday August 19, against the alleged failure of the district administration in taking effective measures against the repeated acts of desecration of Hindu centres of faith and worship in the recent past.

The protestors were led by leaders like M B Puranik, Manohar Tulajaram, Sharan Pumpwell, Premalata Achar, former MLC K Balakrishna Bhat and Vijayashree. They said, the symbolic protest held on Wednesday aims at expressing the concern and strong resentment of the Hindu community against the acts of desecration of their centres of worship. The leaders alleged that the administration is engaging in the appeasement of minorities and has failed to respect the general sentiments of the majority. The administration was warned that there is a limit for the patience of the Hindus.

The leaders demanded for the immediate arrest of the culprits involved and for taking strong steps against them. They pointed that several temples have of late, been targetted by the thieves, which is sacrilegious. Pointing out to the recent incidents of breaking of the idols of the presiding deity of Ullal Sri Lakshminarasimha temple and of Lord Shiva installed at Pandeshwar Ashwathakatte and the desecration of Sharavu Lord Mahaganapati temple by throwing the skull of a cow's carcass etc., they claimed that the police stations, where cases have been registered, have shown little interest in taking prompt action. As a result, none of the culprits have been booked, they complained.

They noted that the government gets crores of rupees through Hindu temples and argued that it is the duty of the endowments department to post security staff at the temples. If the government is not in a position to protect the temples, the leaders said, they are prepared to protect them by training the youngsters, if the government hands over the task to them. They warned that any further acts that are targetted at desecrating the Hindu religious centres will draw strong reaction from the entire Hindu community.

VHP vice president Jagadish Shenava, secretary Krishnamurty and Satyajit Suratkal of Hindu Jagaran Vedike addressed the protestors. A memorandum was handed over to the district administration on the occasion.

I think these Protestors have a genuine and good cause, and the Police authorities should seriously investigate the matter and take suitable action against the culprits.
