AQI in Gurugram reaches severe zone, advisory issued

Gurugram, Nov 15 (IANS): As the air quality in Gurugram entered the severe zone, the district administration issued an advisory to people suggesting that they complete outdoor work between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Deputy Commissioner Amit Khatri said that the Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached the severe zone. It is hazardous for people especially children, elderly persons and pregnant women.

"Residents are facing problems such as breathlessness, cough, dizziness and eyes burning. They have been requested to stay back at home and go out only if it is urgent. They are also suggested to use masks of good quality and avoid driving vehicles in the city. The traffic officials are also directed to be alert to avoid traffic gridlock situations on the roads," Khatri said.

Two air pollution measurement centres of Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) -- Gwal Pahari and Vikas Sadan -- have recorded AQI of 430 and 490 respectively. Gwal Pahari is near to Delhi's Mehrauli.

Alarmingly, the average PM 2.5 level registered 426 cubic meter at Vikas Sadan and 490 cubic meter at Gwal Pahari. The nitrogen dioxide and carbon oxide levels also reached 100 cubic meter which falls in the extremely serious category.

"We have directed enforcement agencies to keep a vigil at parks and waste dumping yards and ensure no one burns leaves or garbage. Police officials, Patwaris, Tehsildars and Sarpanches of villages are directed to keep a tab on stubble burning in rural areas," Khatri said.
