Mangalore, Aug 20: A strange calm descended over the city with vehicles staying off the road and police patrols taking their place as night fell on Thursday August 20. 

After four incidents of assault in the city, the district administration decided to enforce ban orders in the city especially in sensitive places and all business establishments were told to down shutters by 8 pm. This was to be implemented for two days from Friday August 21. But the police ensured compliance with orders from Thursday itself to prevent any untoward incidents.























Following announcements by the police all over the city, shops and other business establishments closed by about 8.30 pm and the city turned quiet with only the police siren being heard intermittently.

It almost seemed that curfew had been clamped in the area. This ban will be only for two days, but it will be continued if any untoward incidents happen.

All the roads in the city have a police presence and all the vehicles plying on the roads are being checked. There is no restriction on public transport, but the buses went off the road due to the lack of passengers.

    I do not understand the point in having the establishments closed completely for just 2 days and how it will help nab the culprits or reduce violence. Murders, Stealing etc happens in all the cities across the globe but we have never heard curfew being imposed without any meaning in any big cities. Idle mind is a devil''s workshop. When there are no activities people are more likely to get into criminal activities than a vibrant city that never sleeps.

    Thanks to the police & DC & to the state government. The CM himself is looking into the matter. On his orders, the measures were taken- wonder how some of the comments are pointing to the govt.!! largest and most gruisome of the communal riots in Mlore happened in the past when non-BJP govts were there both in the state & country.!! We need to be proud that Kar is rated 2nd best of the country after the Delhi CM !!

    I DON''T UNDERSTAND THE LOGIC BEHIND THIS. IS THE ADMINISTRATION UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT VIOLENCE CAN BE CURBED BY CLOSING DOWN SHOPS BY 8 PM? IN MY OPINION, THIS IS ABSOLUTELY ABSURD. WHY SHOULD THE SPIRITS OF OUR HINDU BRETHREN BE DAMPENED DURING THEIR FESTIVALS? IS IT NOT BETTER TO ARREST ALL GOONDAS AND ROWDY SHEETERS AND KEEP THEM IN POLICE CUSTODY FOR A FEW DAYS INSTEAD OF INCONVENIENCING THE PUBLIC?

    Mangalore seems to be hub of crimes these days..!! This decission n order by DC with Police Dept to close shops at 8pm is a welcome move, at least to curb the menace for the time being. I wish we the people co-operate with them n ensure things fall in place. Yes it is unfortunate to see our city in such silence, especially during Ganesh Chaturthi time. But let us agree that we need to be careful than being regretful later. In what ever way, we should send out a message to these culprits, who are trying to disturb the harmony in our city, that Mangalore can not be portrayed or show cased as a Communal Sensitive Hub. Thanks to DC Mr. Ponnuraj, IGP Mr. Gopal Hosur & SP Dr. A S Rao for the thoughtful decission.

    this curfew is nothing but an eye wash.there is this chauthi coming up,and these "jobless"wings,want to create problems.they harm,or even murder their fellow bretheren saying it was due to communalism.this all is possible only where a clearly obvious partial government like BJPrules.instead of the celebrations,unnecessary halt in normal life,PLEASE REPAIR THE ROADS by spending our money on us.By imposing ban on public,crime cannot b curbed.after lifting the orders,it''ll stast again.so....wat''s the solution?CURFEW????

    It is good to see Mr. V. Ponnuraj, the D.C. of Mangalore, Dr. A. Subrahmanyeshwar Rao, Superintendent of Police for D. K. and Gopal Hosur, Inspector General of police for western range acts united to snub the communal forces emerging from both the religion. These thugs will not dare raise their head if our Govt. officials are supported by our elected representatives. May God bless them for their good work? Long live such principled officials.

    Only criminal minded can do harm. Mangalore was cool and calm for sometime. At times politicians create vulnerable condition by backing them. All criminals irrespective of caste and creed should be booked for the future of Mangalore. Budding weeds should be removed for better prospects. All outside elements should be kept under watch.

    i congratulate Mr.V. Ponnuraj, the D.C. of Mangalore , Dr.A Subrahmanyeshwara Rao,Superintendent of Police for D.K. and our Gopal Hosur, Inspector General of police for western range., for taking the apprehensive step to curb violence.     the administration failed to check the growth of communal gundas in mangalore. its a shame to mangalore. if it continues, then the educational business will slow down as 90% of the childrens studying in mangalore institutions are from other states. the parents may forced to opt other calm states.

    This kind of silence is not welcome at the time of festivals.We want to see harmony is prevailed everywhere and people are free to move around. Ganesh chaturthi is a major festival for every one of us. when people should have been busy shopping, buying pooja things etc. , it is pathetic to see Mangalore in a gloomy state. I wish everything will come to normal soon and we see more people on road and definitely not deserted city at 7.45 p.m.

    After BJP has got into power the issues like destruction of church,masjids , killings of religious preachers,ban on every damn thing - looks like these acts are out of insecurity these hindutva forces have developed, The entire hindutva is not based on vedas or upanishads so these guys are not doing justice to hindus as well by implementing personal programs.

    Crime is related to some motive, only out here we sow the seeds of communal motive resulting policing activities and closures. Such incidents inhibits the growth of the region leading to bad investments and major investors turning away from a prime location ideally suited for good venture
