Mangalore: Peace Committee Meet Discusses Means to Curb Violence in District

Mangalore, Aug 21: A peace committee meeting was held at the deputy commissioner’s office on Friday August 21, to discuss and provide suggestions for maintaining peace in the district.
V Ponnuraj, deputy commissioner (DC), said at the start of the meet that it was essential to maintain peace in the city as well as the district, and hence, all citizens should be responsible for this.
The meeting was to seek the opinions of leaders of organizations and the leaders of political parties.
Ramanath Rai, member of legislative assembly, said that the violence reported is mainly within the city. “The violence has been inspired by some of the organizations lead by well-educated people. So, the police should take necessary action against the culprit without any fear, but spare the innocents”, he added.
Ibrahim Kodijal, vice-president, district Congress party, said that ban orders in the city by 8 pm was hurting the businessmen in the city and suggested that the time be changed to 10 pm.
M B Puranik, leader of Vishwa Hindu Parishat, said that the ban orders by the district administration was good for maintaining peace as the incidents had happened during night time and so the decision by the district administration should be appreciated.
Hanumantha Kamath, president, Nagarika Hitharakshana Vedike, said, “The peace committee meeting should not be confined to speeches by leaders but should be implemented also. Most of the religious leaders speak about peace in the meeting but do differently outside. Some of the leaders are advocating the culprits arrested by police in relation to the violence, and this should be stopped”.
Shrinivas Kamath, president, Kanara Chamber of Commerce (KCC), vented his anger against the national media and said that they were depicting the city in a bad light and showing it to be hit by violence indicating that living here is dangerous. He said that minor issues were being blown out of proportion and this should be stopped.
District-in-charge minister Krishna Palemar, Nalin Kumar Kateel, Member of Parliament, superintendent of police A S Rao, and additional deputy commissioner Prabhakar Sharma were present.
