Mangalore, Aug 23: Ganesh Chaturthi in the city was celebrated with pomp, gaiety and religious fervour on Sunday August 23. The recent disturbing incidents did not seem to dim the spirits of the devotees of Lord Ganesha and it was also particularly seen that Mangaloreans were quite enjoying the lifting of the three-day 8 pm to 8 am prohibitory orders, which ended on Saturday August 22 at 8 am.

Sarvajanika Ganeshotsava Samiti, Omkarnagar, Bunts Hostel celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi with high religious spirit. H P C Shetty of United Nations Organisation inaugurated the celebration and Alva Associates K N Alva hoisted the flag. Mysore Paper Mills retired director Shivram Adyanthaya distributed corns on the occasion.

In a grand celebration ganesh idol was inatalled and then religious rituals such as Ganahoma and offerings by devotees were held. After the grand puja, the programme of patriotic songs, Jaago Bharat by the team led by Chakravarti Sulibele was staged.

Ganesha idols have been installed and Chaturthi celebrations have begun at Bejai organized by Sarvajanika Ganeshotsava Samiti, Shraddhanandanagar, Hindu Yuva Sene at Nehru Maidan and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh at Sanghaniketan to name a few. As it is a tradition every year, Ganesha Idols have been installed at Police Lane, Pandeshwar, KSRTC, Bejai and Chakrapani Temple, Attavar among others.

While it is great that my fellowmen of Mangalore come together to celebrate Ganesh Chathurti, I hope that people with flu-like symptoms voluntarily stay away. This will help in containing H1N1 and will be the best way to celebrate Lord Ganesha''s festival. It will be criminal of anyone with flu-like symptoms to knowingly mingle with revelers. Please understand and do not do that.
