Bijapur: Bad Weather Hits Rescue Operation of Four-year-old Kanchana
DEVAR NIMBARGI VILLAGE (BIJAPUR DIST), Sep 3 (The Hindu): The work to rescue four-year-old Kanchana, who fell into an open borewell here, has been hampered because of the adverse weather conditions and the detection of boulders 30 feet inside a parallel hole dug as part of the effort.
Chances of the girl’s survival do not appear to be bright as officials have not noticed any movement since Monday.
Two teams of commandos, fire-fighters and police officials, who blasted the boulder using gelatin sticks, were able to dig another eight feet.
Two blasts were carried out with a gap of three hours till Tuesday midnight.
The operation was stopped at that time owing to downpour, and both the approach roads to the village were cut off. A team of experts reached the spot from Hutti Gold Mines in Raichur district and gave a push to the operations. As the soil was hard and the boulders many, the team decided that the blasting of the stones should continue.
After conducting a blast it took one-and-a-half hours to remove the mud and pieces of stone from the parallel hole, officials told The Hindu.
The parallel hole is now 38 feet deep as a result of the operation. As Kanchana was 45 ft inside the borewell, further digging is required to reach her. Officials said the operation would be further hit if there is more rain.
Deputy Commissioner R. Shantraju; Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat K.H. Kaknur; Assistant Commissioner Y.S. Patil; Superintendent of Police K.V. Shridhar, and Additional Superintendent of Police P.F.A. Trasgar are supervising the rescue operation.
