Mangalore, Sep 8: September 8 is the most important day for the Konkani-speaking Catholics living in Coastal Karnataka. The way ˜Monthi Fest' or St Mary's feast, also known by the name, ˜Nativity of Mary, is being celebrated by the Christians here since long, is not only unique, but also appears to be a way of thanking mother nature and mother earth for the bounteous crops, in addition to paying obeisance to Virgin Mary.

On the birth anniversary of their beloved ˜Monthi', the Catholics here restrict themselves to vegetarian diet. It is also the day on which they have the ˜Nove Jevan (new meal). Every catholic family collects freshly harvested ears of paddy and sugarcanes, which are blessed by the priests. The grains from the paddy so taken home, are crushed and their powder is added to milk. The senior members of every family serve this milk to other members. Many of those, who have settled abroad, specifically come home to take part in 'Monthi Fest'

In the city, one of the earliest Monthi Fest celebrations were held in Milagres church, in the year 1906. Unlike other places, in Milagres, people gather at one of the houses in their wards every day for nine days prior to Monthi Fest for novena, instead of gathering at the church.

The world over, the day is celebrated as the ˜feast of immaculate conception. The devotees use this day for re-asserting their unwavering faith in the Lord, with soulful prayers, with the clear knowledge that remembering the kindness of divine powers invokes divine mercy that gets them constant flow of the God's blessings.

All these joyous occassions can be more happier if we celebrate alongwith the orphans, old and needy people. These people hardly get anything to enjoy. It is the same monotonous routine day for them. Let us make a new begining

Referring to Ronald Roche`s/Mangalore-Ruzai`s comments above, about the noise and pollution : I don`t find anything wrong with a pompous celebration of the Feast even, with the cost of an extra noise and a little bit of pollution, if there should be any, with the patakkies etc - after all the occasion of Monthi Fest comes only once a year, and what`s wrong with an extra bit of celebration and debonair - the festival of Diwali is celebrated yearly with all those extravagant patakkies and fire displays continuously for three days, adding much more disturbance, noise and pollution, and no one seems to be complaining about it - so, go for it, and enjoy the great festival of Monthi Fest, the devout people.

Thank you Daijiworld for the beautiful coverage of ''''''''Mothi Fest'''''''' from all over the world. I’m from Paladka Parish(Via Moodbidri), working in UAE. I am a simple man and not able to express my views in English. So I always express it through my friends. They help me to view this website, I’m grateful to them all. I was eagerly waiting to see the celebration of ‘Monthi Fest’ in my native parish, but all in vain. We have so many great people, experts in all trades, our parish priests are very good in collections, but they fail to understand this simple need of their Brethren who are away from their homeland. Hope this message reaches to our PP and the Heroes of our Parish, so that in future at least we can expect some news of our hometown in Daijiworld.

Dear All, Next year onwards let us expect more peaceful, beautiful ceremonial, Monthi fest without Noise pollution and Air pollution by avoiding crackers (Pataaki). Let us make the statement-"but also appears to be a way of thanking mother nature and mother earth for the bounteous crops"- true without cracker noise and smoke. Thank you Mr. Simon Francis Lasrado for your meanigful and beautiful comments. Thank you "DAIJI".

I surf daijiworld at least thrice a day.Since yesterday I have been trying to get glimpses of ''Monti Fest'' celebrations of Kinnigoly & Hospet churches. But in vain. When I saw the photographs last year I was so happy. This year Iam still longing for the same. We are almost 3000 plus kms away from our mother land. We also have employees from Mangalore working with us. We have no catholics of the number we have in Magalore and elsewhere. We are truly saddened. If someone has clicked a few photographs of these church celebrations, kindly email at gregory.dsouza@yahoo.co.in OR diljyotiallahabad@yahoo.co.in Thanks Daijiworld for the wonderful coverage and pictures of beautiful celebrations.

Congratulation Daiji for your quick network efficiency on Monthi Fest. Happy Feast to all. I have seen all photographs including mine of Fatima Church, Mundkur. All have come well and have called back my childhood memory carrying flowers to church. The striking difference of 50 years back and now is the number of children are seen less compared then. Christan population is decreasing.

May God bless you all and grant you success in your good work. May our heavenly Mother intercede for you all and bless your Families. It is true that many of us miss this beautiful family feast which is the Nativity of Mother Mary with it´s rich traditions. Because in many other parts of India or outside India, does not exist this practice of celebrating with the family, with the first crop (new meal) and the 9 day ''novena'' with the beautiful flowers etc.

Tracing back the history here in México and other Central American countries, we have the 9 day ''novena'' but for other moments such as the Parish Feast, 9 day Rosary and prayer for the dead and 9 day ''posadas''before the Christmas etc.

Mexicans had the tradition of clebrating 9 day feast to their Azteca Gods nearly 500 years back before the Spanish missionaries arrived. They too continued with same practice of 9 day celebration. And the no.9 is symbolic and we can guess, why? I wish you all a meaningful ''Monthi Festh''.
