Mangaluru, Dec 22: Two men who lost their lives in the police firing during the protest against the Citizen Amendment Act (CAA) in the city on Thursday December 19 have been named as accused in the FIR that has been filed in the Mangaluru North (Bunder) police station.

Abdul Jaleel, a resident of Kandak and Nausheen, a resident of Kudroli were killed in the police firing. The FIR has been loged against 29 people including these two men. Jaleel has been named as the third and Nausheen as the eighth accused in the FIR.

Giving details of the incident Dr P S Harsha, city police commissioner had said to the scribes on December 19 that there were 6,000 to 7,000 protesters who tried to set fire to Bunder police station. However, in the FIR registered at the Bunder police station by DCP, it is said that there were 1,500 to 2,000 protesters.

In one more FIR that has been registered with respect to this protest and firing in the Mangaluru South police station, 45 people have been named as the accused. So far seven FIRs have been registered with regard to the disturbances that occurred in Mangaluru on Thursday and 400 unidentified persons are also booked as accused.

In the FIR registered at the Bunder police station Jaleel and Nausheen, both victims of police firing, have been named as members of the mob that was protesting. However, sections of the media have reported that they did not partake in the protest. Quoting an eye witnesses, it has been reported that Jaleel was waiting for his children who were returning from school and Nausheen was returning after his daily work as wage labourer.

CM B S Yediyurappa met the family members of Jaleel and Nausheen on Saturday December 21 and consoled them. He has also instructed the deputy commissioner (DC) to give suitable compensation to the bereaved families.

The FIR that has been filed at the Bunder police station states, "On the evening of December 19, at around 4.15 pm to 5.30 pm, around 1,500 to 2,000 protesters had illegally joined together in order to set fire to the Mangaluru North police station as well as hatched a plan to kill police personnel. They also possessed lethal weapons. The protesters included members of various Muslim organizations, including PFI and SDPI.

"When the protesters were pelting stones and throwing tyres after burning them towards the police station DCP of law and order Arunamshugiri and personnel rushed to the police station. They asked the group of protesters to disperse. But the protesters did not listen to the orders and continued pelting stones. In the prevailing situation, as the police personnel got injured. To bring the arson into control, police fired in the air and two protesters got injured. They died on the way to the hospital. In addition, five more protesters were injured. The accused obstructed the police personnel from disbursing their duty and also tried to kill them."
