Dubai, Dec 28: A probe by a German broadcaster highlighted the appalling treatment of migrant workers employed to build stadiums for FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The broadcaster stated the dreadful conditions of employed migrants most of who are of Nepali origin. The workers were reportedly found to be living without money or food in cramped spaces and prison-like conditions.

One of the workers in a video lamented that about 125 workers including he were prisoners living only on bread and water.

The worker said that he only wants to go home as he cannot live in those conditions anymore. He is unable to call his family in Nepal. He hopes that the company would pay them the money that they deserve.

Design Maintenance, a sub-contractor for the Al Thumama Stadium employed these workers for World Cup projects for Design Maintenance. The stadium located twelve kilometers south of Doha will have a seating capacity of 40 thousand.

Qatar is constructing nine new stadiums and renovating three more for FIFA cup. It has faced international criticism over its treatment and exploitation of its nearly two million migrant laborers. An investigation by the British Guardian newspaper in 2013 had called the workers World Cup slaves and predicted the death of four thousand workers by the time the project is completed.
