Karwar: Fifteen-foot-long Whale Dies Accidentally in Devabag Beach

Karwar, Sep 19: A big whale died after accidentally coming out of the deep sea off Devabag Beach near here on Thursday night. The whale had apparently come  near the beach chasing the fishes. But it could not return to the sea due to the receding water level.



The 15-foot-long whale was first spotted near the south-west side of the beach. On seeing the whale struggling to get back to the sea, the fishermen tried to push it. Their efforts to help the 1.5-tonne whale went in vain because of its big size and lack of light during the dusk. Their hopes of a rise in the water level overnight were also dashed.

As the news on its death on Friday morning spread, the officials of Ocean Research Centre (ORC) and many people arrived at the spot. ORS scientist Krupesh Sharma said that they would study the whale to identify its species.

SAD END: The whale is brought out of the sea waters using an earth-moving equipment at Devabag Beach in Karwar on Friday.

    Human activities have been suggested to adversely impact whale populations, such as the unregulated use of fishing gear which catches anything that swims into it, collisions with ships and propellers, and waste contaminants.People should pay care for the endangared species, Whales are very common in Karwar Sea.
