Karnataka rules out giving up Belagavi to Maharashtra

Bengaluru, Dec 31 (IANS) Asserting that the boundary dispute with Maharashtra was a settled issue, a defiant Karnataka Chief Minster B.S. Yediyurappa on Monday ruled out giving even an inch of land in Belagavi district to the neighbouring state.

"Maharashtra will not get a single inch of land from Belagavi district as the Mahajan report had long ago upheld our claim on the city and the border areas of the district, which are part of Karnataka," Yediyurappa told reporters here.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddav Thackeray had raised the boundary dispute last week.

"It is not fair for Maharashtra to rake up the boundary issue again and create confusion, as the Mahajan Commission's report in 1968 upheld Karnataka's claim on Belagavi and 800 villages in the border district," reiterated Yediyurappa.

As the Mahajan report has been accepted as final, he said the state government would not allow Maharashtra to raise the issue again and create tension in the border areas.

"I appeal to the people of Karnataka to maintain peace and not get provoked by the political statements being made from across the border on the ownership of Belagavi and the villages in the district," added Yediyurappa.

Belagavi, about 500 km northwest of Bengaluru, was part of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency during the British rule but was given to Mysore state during the reorganisation of the states on linguistic grounds in 1956.

When Maharashtra made claim to the border district on the basis that there were more Marathi-speaking people living in Belagavi and its villages, which are part of Karnataka, the Central government constituted the Mahajan Commission in 1967 to settle the inter-state boundary dispute.

Though the Commission upheld Karnataka's claim on Belagavi and about 800 villages on demographic data showing more Kannada-speaking people residing in them, Maharashtra filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Mahajan report and the case is still pending in the apex court.

The revival of the boundary row led to suspension of Karnataka bus services to Maharashtra's Kolhapur after a few state-run buses were stoned and damaged by miscreants last week.

Thackeray had appointed ministers Chhagan Bhjubal and Eknath Shinde as coordinators to expedite the boundary dispute case in the top court.

He also raised the issue in the Maharashtra Assembly, referring to some areas as "Karnataka-occupied Maharashtra".

I agree with mr.shetty and sameer shaikh that Kone or Kadwad belongs to Goa and only in 1864 was given to British for port expansion. It needs to be REVERTED to Goa along with 2 kms No land. Currently Karwar (which british called Carwar) is RETAINED by Karnataka. It is 90% Konkani speaking alongwith Joida & Haliyal.

Tulunadu belongs to Tuluvas-5th Dravidian people. Tilagari script. Netravathi river diversion. Tulu in 8th script please then Statehood. Kasargod belongs to Tulunadu. No Endosulfan.

If technically speaking Belagavi up till Karwar district in the North Canara are under the Maratha ruling belongs to Maharashtra. When the state borders are drawn some part of Solapur in Maharashtra is under Karnataka are given away.
If we Indians are start fighting on the basis of caste, creed and religion then CAA bill should be made obsolete.
In Bangalore city out of 10 people 7 are from outside the state happily resided enjoying the Kannadiga status and employed more than Kanndigas share.
This is same status for more than 10 rivers in India and still we call our nation Republic of India?
Where is unity among Indians when we the government is giving red carpet welcome for the prosecuted citizens of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan other than Muslim only?

A foolish unnecessary tussle between politicians when people in the region have no problem staying together. Belgaum had been a bilingual region and people are assimilated, they understand and speak each other’s language. They live in peace and harmony. Marathi is the official language of the city corporation but Kannada is also permitted. There are both Marathi and Kannada schools in the district. Then why these claims and counterclaims? Hope good sense prevails and people will not participate in such agitations.

Tulunaad and Tulu People have the utmost respect to Christians and Muslims,

We give respect by calling Porbule and Saibere also share brotherly relations,

In return what we want is to respect us and if possible help us gain our Glory back, or to help us to make Tulu an official Language in India (adding to 8th schedule)

Don't you guys think like Goa, TN, KL, KA, ANDRA we guys also deserve a state because our culture is older than all, Tulu is the First Dravidian language an independent one like Tamil, not derived from any other like Malayalam Kannada, please check for facts yourself.

ShivSena is a marathi manoos party. They are only confined to Maharashtra and they rake up such issues. Now Shiva Sena has to compromise because it has joined hands with NCP and Congress. Previously with BJP they had a free hand to do whatever they wish.

I agree with Mr. S. Shetty. According to historical records, Tuluva Kingdom extended from Honnavar to Kasargod with Barkur as capital. Karwar, Ankola and Kumta were part of greater Goa called Gomantak.

Karwar was part of Portuguese Goa, it was handed over to British to develop Karwar Port in 1864. Karwar is culturally and socially connected to Goa. No need for any more division, at last it is Hindustan.

    I agree with Mr.Shetty,
Having top class educational institutions, top health care sector, best hospitality industries, rich heritage, culture and intelligent people why our tulunadu is sidelined for many years.
We have enormous tourism potential. We too have backwaters, rivers and hills which could have developed like Kerala.
Why our youth have to go to other cities and middle east for an employment?
Famous nationalized banks birth place is tulunadu why they are neglected?
Manipal itself is a jewel of tulunadu being a educational hub.
    Let us think about it.
