On Eid, Clerics Appeal to Muslims to Help Eradicate Polio

Lucknow, Sep 21 (IANS) Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramzan, was celebrated with enthusiasm in this Uttar Pradesh capital Monday with Muslim clerics appealing to the community members to join hands for eradicating polio from the state.

"After holding prayers, I personally appealed to the Muslims to make efforts to combat polio," Maulana Khalid Rasheed, prominent Sunni cleric who heads Lucknow's oldest Islamic seminary, told IANS.

"Soon after the congregational prayers were over at Aishbagh Eidgah (the biggest prayer ground in the city), I asked them (Muslims) to take a pledge for eradicating polio. I believe, over the years, Muslim clerics have considerably contributed in sensitising the community members. The resistance among Muslims towards anti-polio drops has come down as a result of our efforts," he added.

According to officials, as many as 250 cases of polio were reported from various parts of Uttar Pradesh, particularly the western region, till Sep 18.

On the occasion, clerics asked Muslims to continue performing pious deeds even after Ramzan and abide by the Quran.

After the prayers, Muslims exchanged greetings and sweets with their relatives and friends. Children donning new clothes and skull caps were seen visiting parks.

Muslims also visited houses of their relatives, where they were treated with 'sheer korma' - a sweet dish prepared from vermicelli, garnished with dry fruits.

In other parts of the state, the festival was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety. Huge gatherings were seen in cities like Kanpur, Agra, Varanasi and Allahabad.

Polio is a disese and its state responsibility to contain this epidemic. However, I request and urge muslim clerics and clergymen in their capacity during Friday and Eid sermons to condemnn all violence and terror attacks by followers of Islam and the true meaning of Jehad and not to be carried away by fanatic muslims who misuse Jehad. They must preach true tenets of Islam and they have a greater social obligation during present scenario. The true meaning of Islam which means peace must be taught to innocent and ignorant muslims. They must sow the seed of love and reconcialiation and forebearance. They must understand their responsibilities towards the society and the country. They must desist from issuing unholy and unreasonable fatwas without the sanctity of holy Quran and prophetic teachings. All selfish activities must be stopped. If all muslim clerics and clergy of India preach and practice with authority, I am sure all forms of terror can be eradicated. The muslim clerics and leaders have a greater role to play when the country is heading towards intolerance and devision on communual lines. They must first teach about the rights of neighbour of a muslim in the light of Quran and prophetic tradidtions. There is no compulsion in Islam and Islam advocates religious tolerance and peace. The present day Islamic terrorism is the outcome of fanatic Islamic clergies who detract the youth from the right path and use them for blood shed. All these fanatism must be condemned by true clergies and Islam has been the religion of peace and would continue to remain so despite present day turmoil..
