Kalaburagi: No cemetery for last rites - Villagers donate deceased’s mortal remains

Kalaburagi, Jan 3: In a strange incident that is reported from Bhankura village of Chittapur taluk of the district, the body of an elderly woman was donated to the medical fraternity as there is no cemetery in the village to bury it.

Subhadramma (75), a resident of the village died. Her burial could not be carried out as the family is poor and does not own any land. So the family members had no other option but to donate her body to the government hospital.

It is gathered that more than 40 people of this village, who have died earlier also have donated their bodies because the village does not have a public cemetery.

The noticeable point about this whole affair is that, this is the constituency of former social welfare minister Priyank Kharge. Though the money is already released for the purchase of land for the cemetery, due to the negligence of people representatives and officials of the government this is not done.

Villagers, who have sufficient land, bury or cremate their family members on their own land. However, those who do not have land end up donating the bodies of their loved ones to the hospital as they have no other option.

Body donation shouls be by choice , not by necessity . Here they did it because there was no option , govt must reserve some funds in such cases . If one does such act out of consent despite having financial resources , this also must be encouraged
