Udupi: Tsunami Waves in Pacific Islands - Fishermen Asked to be Alert

Udupi, Oct 2: In view of the havoc created by Tsunami waves in Pacific islands, the fishermen of the district were on Thursday October 1, warned to be careful about the sea turning turbulent. The deputy commissioner has asked those living near the seashore, to be watchful. The officials also were instructed to be in readiness to face any eventuality.

All the fishermen's associations were told to advise their members not to venture into the sea. However, the meteorological department is yet to issue any official warning in this respect.

The fishermen operating from important fishing ports of the district like Hejmady, Malpe, Gangolly, Hangarakatte Kodybengre, Shirur etc., have been advised to suspend fishing activities. Ports department assistant director, Harish Kumar, confirmed that the fishermen have been cautioned.

In the meantime, additional deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, Prabhakar Sharma, informed that the coast of Dakshina Kannada district is not likely to feel any impact from the Tsunami created in the South Pacific islands on Tuesday. "As on date, no danger of huge waves has been foreseen here. No advance warning has been issued, in order to obviate creation of unnecessary concerns," he clarified.

Commandant of the Coast Guard at Panambur, Padam Shekhar Jha, said that the sea here has not displayed any volatility as on date. If any indications are observed, warning would be issued forthwith, he added.
