Puttur: Wild Mouse Deer Spotted at Indraprasta Vidyalaya, Rescued by Forest Dept

Puttur, Oct 9: A wild mouse deer, known in zoological terms as ‘tragulus meminal’, was found in the compound of Indraprasta Vidyalaya, Uppinangady, near here on Friday October 9 morning. 

The mouse deer, which was about 18 months old, was rescued by Vidyalaya principal Ravindra, by securely trapping it in a cage. He then informed the forest department of the finding.  The mouse deer wanted freedom, and began its struggle for freedom from inside the cage.  Uppinangady range forest officer, Sundar Shetty, administered first aid to the mouse deer and took it to Periyashanti Forest, where it was set free. 

The students got a rare opportunity to have a close look at the mouse deer, which is very rare, at the school premises.  Meanwhile, the mouse deer also got a new lease of life, as the locals usually hunt down such wild-life as and when sighted in the nearby forest.
