Udupi, Oct 11: MLA Raghupati Bhat inaugurated Krishi Mela at Agriculture Research Centre, Brahmavar here on Sunday October 11 morning. The Krishi Mela will conclude on Monday October 12 evening.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA Raghupati Bhat said said that undivided Dakshina Kannada district has just one fisheries college while it lacks an agriculture college that could be set up in the large holding of Agriculture Research Centre at Brahmavar.  A proposal has been sent to CM B S Yeddyurappa and agriculture minister, while the agriculture minister has already consented for the proposal, he said.

He said that the landholdings of nearly 354 acres by Agriculture Research Centre, Brahmavar should be better utilized by undertaking agriculture activities for the benefit of farming community. The district needs urgent measures to promote farming, since most of the youth are migrating to metros and abroad, in search of better future.  If the agriculture and plantations department implements projects efficiently in the district, which would rejuvenate the farming and reduce the migration to a certain extent, he emphasized.

Moreover, fertile farmlands are being acquired in the district to set up Special Economic Zones (SEZ). It’s in China that Agriculture Economic Zones are also set up to have food security, besides SEZs in the country. The irrigation has been given priority in north Karnataka, while the Varahi irrigation project in the district should be extended to the landholdings in the region of Brahmavar, which would benefit a large number of sugarcane growers, he stressed.

Zilla panchayat president Gladys D’Almeida inaugurated the exhibition organized at Krishi Mela. Zilla panchayat member Bhujanga Shetty inaugurated the nursery. M M Devaraj, K C Shankare Gowda, Dakshina Kannada district Krishika Samaj president S D Sampath Samrajya and Udupi district Krishika Samaj president K B Muniraj Ballal released the technical handbooks.

Bangalore Agriculture University vice-chancellor Dr P B Chengappa presided. Dr S Shivanna, Dr R S Kulkarni, K Sangayya and Ashok were present. The mela is jointly organized by Agriculture University, Bangalore, Agriculture Research Centre, Bramavar, Agriculture Science Centre both Mangalore and Brahmavar, District agriculture, plantation and irrigation development department, district Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) and district Krishika Samaj.
