J&K Lt. Governor for conservation, development of Dal Lake


Srinagar, Feb 8 (IANS): At a high-level review meeting held at Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu on Friday called for several measures aimed at conservation and beautification of the Dal Lake here with the active involvement of local community and stakeholders.

The Lt. Governor reviewed the proposals for construction of a western foreshore road, strengthening of equipment and machinery, and measures for conservation, beautification and rehabilitation.

He called for a comprehensive proposal for safeguarding livelihood of Dal dwellers and their active involvement in the conservation process.

He directed concerned officials for protection of lake boundaries, completion of Sewerage Treatment Plant works by August 2020, enhancing efforts for deweeding, beautification of available land patches, re-surfacing of road on the periphery of the lake, improving the street lighting network, providing smart cards to Dal dwellers, finalization of the rehabilitation plan based on the survey conducted and scientific measures for conservation of the lake.

He also directed periodic reviews be made of progress achieved and planning the required interventions accordingly.

Reviewing the proposal for western foreshore road, the Lt. Governor directed the Srinagar Deputy Commissioner to initiate the process of acquisition of land for the road corridor and the Chief Engineer PWD to simultaneously process the finalization of DPR and initiating the tendering process with aim of completing the road within the stipulated time.

He further directed that measures be taken aimed at aesthetic improvement of the area, green spaces, walkways, heritage markets and other amenities on the banks of the lake, involving local residents in the initiative.
