Congress hopeful about Delhi poll results

New Delhi, Feb 8 (IANS): The Congress is expecting a "good result" when the Delhi Assembly election results are declared on February 11,

It hopes to repeat its 2013 performance when it won eight seats even though it ended with no seats in the 2015 Assembly elections that swept Arvind Kejriwal to power.

Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit scoffed at the exit polls and said: "We don't believe in exit polls, which are often wrong. We know that we have given a tough fight in majority of Delhi seats and expect good results. But in a democracy, the janata is janardan (public is God)."

The Congress is eyeing wins in Kasturba Nagar, Seelampur, Gandhinagar, Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazaar and Matia Mahal, a party source said. The party was also hopeful in Sangam Vihar segment, apart from the constituencies in the Old Delhi area, the source added.

The Congress has given a good fight to the AAP in almost all the 12 constituencies where the Muslim voters are a deciding factor, though they seemed to prefer the AAP.

Sajid, a voter in Gandhinagar, said: "We wanted to vote for the Congress but instead opted for Arvind Kejriwal to defeat divisive forces."

In Shaheen Bagh too, many voters wanted to ensure the defeat of the BJP, with the area witnessing increased voter turnout in the last two hours of polling.

"We know the Congress is not going to form the government in Delhi. We can't take a risk. Kejriwal is a good option as the Congress has no face in Delhi," said area resident Israr Ahmed.

Congress leader Alok Sharma, however, said that "the Congress could have performed better if we had started early and matched the Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party campaigns."
