Delhi, Feb 11: In a tragic turn of events which took place in the Shalimar Bagh area of Delhi on Sunday, a man murdered his two minor children and then committed suicide by jumping in front of a metro train. As per police sources, the initial probe suggested that the man suffered from depression from being unemployed after his sandpaper factory shut down six months ago. Reportedly he was struggling to restart his business and was being supported by his parents.

Earlier that evening, the Delhi police received an emergency call around 6.54 pm stating that a child had been murdered in a house in northwest Delhi's Shalimar. When the officers entered the building they found the bodies of the children, identified as 14-year-old Samiksha and her six-year-old brother Shreyans, strangled to death on their respective beds.

On searching the home, the cops found the father, 44-year-old Madhur Malani missing. The cops undertook a search for him but soon received information regarding a suicide at the Haiderpur metro station at 5.40 pm. The police then connected the dots of Malani's disappearance to the metro suicide. However, police did not find any suicide note from Malani's body or his home.

The mother, identified as Rupali had left home to go to the market. She told the cops she returned home to find her children dead and husband missing.

The Haiderpur station from where Malani's suicide was reported is on Delhi Metro's Yellow Line. However, the Shalimar Bagh station is on the Pink Line; the two are connected via a change-over at the Azadpur station.

The initial police investigations lead to the fact that Malani may have killed his children in the afternoon and then jumped in front of the metro train later that day.

Meanwhile, to ascertain the exact cause of death of the children a post-mortem is underway and the reports can help reveal the truth, a senior police officer told PTI.

A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered and further investigations are underway, Vijayanta Arya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest), said.
