S N Srivastava appointed Delhi police chief, replaces Amulya Patnaik

New Delhi, Feb 28 (IANS): The Centre on Friday appointed senior IPS officer S.N. Srivastava as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police.

The 1985-batch officer of Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre, Srivastava will replace incumbent Amulya Patnaik, whose one month extension to the post will end on Saturday.

Srivastava, is presently the Special Commissioner, and he has been given additional charge of Delhi Police Commissioner till March 1, 2020 and until further orders, a Home Ministry order said.

Srivastava was earlier posted as Special Director General (Training) with the Central Reserve Police Force. He was ADG (western zone) looking after Jammu and Kashmir at the peak of violence in 2016-17 when Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani was gunned down.

Earlier, Srivastava headed the Delhi Police Special Cell and was instrumental in the arrest of scores of Indian Mujahideen operatives.

    We can have the best , more sincere, dedicated upright officer head the Delhi Police or for that matter in any state, but him to be effective and impartial, he needs other freedom to take decisions based on ground Reality, like it is the norm in Western, and other well developed countries. In India , the burecrats take instructions from the Politican's, whose agenda is to get political mileage when there are riots / communal issue's. What happened in Delhi recently was a spineless Police chief who left matters to drift, had gathered no inteligence reports despite a simmering situation and what can be worse the Police are seen behind the BJP Politican's who were inciting the crowd. I shudder to even think what will happen given the present state of affairs. Five week's to file an FIR ?? In Karnataka people have been put in the slammer for hate speeches / conducting plays even without a decent hearing....
