Congress Leading in Two Assam Seats

Guwahati, Nov 10 (IANS) The Congress was Tuesday leading in the two Assam assembly constituencies for which elections were held last week.

According to latest trends, Wajed Ali Choudhury was leading by more than 4,000 votes in the South Salmara seat with the Asom United Democratic Front (AUDF) candidate Abdur Rahman Ajmal, son of party chief Badruddin Ajmal, in the second position.

In the second by-election held in Dhekiajuli seat in northern Assam's Sonitpur district, Bhimananda Tanti was ahead by nearly 10,000 votes. Asom Gana Parishad's (AGP) Shib Charan Sahu was in the second position.

The by-elections were necessitated after the legislators representing the two seats -- AGP's Joseph Toppo from Dhekiajuli and AUDF's Badruddin Ajmal from South Salmara -- were elected to the Lok Sabha in May.
