Cong faces flight of MLAs in MP, Gujarat ahead of RS polls

New Delhi, March 15 (IANS): Trouble for the Congress seems to be aggravating with the March 26 Rajya Sabha polls coming closer.

While the Kamal Nath-led Madhya Pradesh government is on the brink of collapse with floor test on Monday, the crisis has intensified in the Gujarat party unit and in Rajasthan the Congress is striving to keep the flock together.

In MP, 22 MLAs have revolted against the party and in Gujarat four MLAs have resigned from the Assembly ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls.

The Gujarat Assembly Speaker has confirmed that four MLAs -- Somabhai Patel, Praveen Maru and Pradyuman Singh Jadeja -- have submitted their resignations to his office.

According to sources, two more Congress MLAs from south Gujarat -- Jeetu Chowdhary and Mangal Gavit -- are set to resign. They have gone beyond the reach of Congress leaders.

The trouble came to the fore in the Gujarat party unit after the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fielded Narhari Amin, a former Congressman, as its third candidate in the state.

In MP, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said the Nath government would prove the majority in the House as the Congress MLAs had returned from Jaipur to Bhopal, and rebel MLAs were expected to reach state capital ahead of the floor test.

The MP governor has asked the government to prove its majority on Monday. According to sources, the rebel legislators have written to the Speaker to accept their resignations as he had accepted the resignation of six MLAs.

The Congress is contemplating moving the Supreme Court, if MLAs failed to return from Bengaluru. The party legal eagles were set to challenge the illegal captivity of MLAs, said a Congress source.

In a tweet, Digvijaya Singh alleged that MLAs were tutored in the purported video where the rebel MLAs were saying they were with Jyotiraditya Scindia, who quit the Congress on Tuesday and joined the BJP on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Congress MLAs met at Chief Minister Nath's residence to devise strategy ahead of the floor test.

In Rajasthan, Congress sources said there was no impending threat to the Ashok Gehlot government as Sachin Pilot would not take the step like Scindia, and also the difference between the BJP and the Congress in The Assembly was wider than MP.
