Dubai, Nov 18: As the final countdown is on for the World Kannada Cultural Convention, one of Dubai's biggest Kannada events, to be held in Sheikh Rashid Auditorium on Friday November 20 and Saturday November 21, guests and intellectuals are set to arrive in the city for this two-day event. 

The convention is being organized under the leadership of C R Shetty, Karnataka Sangha, noted politicians, artistes, and poets.

Karnataka chief minister Yeddyurappa has backed out of attending after the political crisis in the state and in view of the ongoing flood relief in North Karnataka.

D V Sadananda Gowda, hailing from Puttur and currently leading the Bharatiya Janata Party in Karnataka, is expected to attend the convention. 

Former state minister Rani Satish is also one of the guests who will be arriving from Bangalore on Thursday November 19.

State minister Krishna Palemar, MLC Mukyamantri Chandru, MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik, G T Devegouda MLA, and other politicians have confirmed their participation in this historic event.

From the world of glamour, noted Kannada actor Puneeth Rajkumar is arriving as are other actors from Bangalore.

Speaking to Daijiworld, the official media partner for the event, president C R Shetty said that the event will take off with a spectacular procession, 'Shobha Yaatre', with numerous tableaus which reflect Kannada culture in the desert land. 

He made a special appeal to all Kannadigas attending the event to reach the venue by 2.00 pm sharp, so as to enable them to start the event on time.

The event is being jointly organized by Karnataka Sangha, Dubai, and ‘Hrudayavahini’ Kannada periodical, Mangalore. 

Every year the convention is organized outside India. In the past, it has been held in Doha, Kuwait, Singapore, and other places.

Noted writer and senior columnist Siddalinga Pattanashetty will preside over the convention. Dr B R Shetty, entrepreneur, UAE, and R Ravi, entrepreneur, Bangalore, will be the guests of honour at the opening ceremony.

‘Togalu Gombeyata’, ‘Janapada Kolata’, photo exhibition, and cultural events by Gulf Kannadigas will be the highlight of the first part of the programme. 

A poetry session will be held under the leadership of Rohidas Nayak, Kumta. Noted poets from Gulf and India will participate in this session. Irshad Moodbidri of Dubai, Shashdhara Nagarajappa of Dubai, Prof M B Kundari Gokak, Antony Swamy, Bangalore, Eriswamy Bellary, Gopinath Rao, Dubai, and Chandrashekar Hiremutt, will present their poems.

‘Yakshagana Bombeyata’ will be presented by Sri Gopalakrishna Yakshagana Bombeyata Sangha (R).

There will be an interactive session on the same day on various subjects. Yajna Narayana Kammaje, K V Maniswami, Srinivas Acharya, Dubai, and Herman Lewis will participate in the entrepreneurship session. 

There will be an honouring ceremony for talents from Karnataka who are achievers in their respective fields.

Walter Nandalike of Daijiworld.com (journalism), Anil Kasagi Bahrain stage art), Herman Lewis (radio), Yogananda Muscat (Kannada language), Akkikalu Venkatesh Chickmaglur (special art), Viresh Rudraswamy Badami (art), Shivarama Kasargod (Kannada language), and V G Pal (stage art), will be honoured in a special programme to be presided over by E V Satynarayan , news editor, ‘Prajavani’. 

Other guests will be Sudhakar Shetty, Kuwait, Austin Santosh, Bahrain, Rajkumar, Bahrain, and Guruprasad Devanahalli, New York, along with Prof Siddalinga Pattanashetty.

On Saturday, the convention will continue with various sessions like media interaction, NRI Kannadigas, women's poetry session, and others.

A grand cultural programme with Puneeth Rajkumar making a special appearance, will also entertain attendees. 

Noted Kannada singer Ramesh Chandra, Kikkeli Krishnamurthy, Nagachandrika, Ashwin Sharma, Kanaka Tara, and Anil Kasagi Bahrain, will entertain with Kannada music.

Those who have not booked the free invitation are asked to do so before Thursday November 19 by 2.00 pm.

All those who have booked their invitations can collect them from Arb Udupi Restaurants in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, and Veenus Restaurant in Karama Dubai.
